Chasing the Warriors

To say the NBA off-season has been crazy would be like saying politicians sometimes exaggerate, as it'd be quite the understatement. With the Golden State Warriors having won the title two of the past three years, quite possibly being one technical foul away from three straight, the rest of the league is attempting to play catch-up. Heading into the coming season, and deservedly so, the Warriors will again be favored to reign supreme at season's end, but four teams (in particular) are certainly doing everything in their power to alter that fate: Boston, Cleveland, Houston, and Oklahoma City. Let's now run down these four teams' off-season acquisitions, how they look going into the 2017-2018 season, and how they stack up against the league-champion Golden State Warriors. Boston Celtics Off-season acquisitions: Kyrie Irving, Gordon Hayward, and Marcus Morris Starting Lineup: PG Kyrie Irving, SG Jaylen Brown, SF Gordon Hayward, PF Marcus Morris, and C Al Horford Pro

What do Derek Wolfe, Steven Seagal, and Lou Holtz all have in common?

What do NFL player Derek Wolfe, actor Steven Seagal, and former college football head coach Lou Holtz all have in common? Yes, it may sound like a joke, but it's not. In recent days, they've all showcased their displeasure with the NFL-national anthem protests. Let's start with Denver Broncos defensive end Derek Wolfe, who said this to ESPN's Josina Anderson on Sunday: "I stand because I respect the men who died in real battle so I have the freedom to battle on the field. Paying tribute to the men and women who have given their lives for our freedom is why I stand. But everyone these days likes to find a reason to protest and that's their right. It's America and you are free to speak your mind. I just feel it's disrespectful to the ones who sacrificed their lives and it's maybe the wrong platform. But like I said to each their own it's America! The greatest country in the world and if you don't think we are the greatest country in the wo

Another 5-star review for my book, "The Art of the Steal"

My latest book, The Art of the Steal , just received another 5-star review. In it, the reader wrote the following: "While it is a short read, it is also... While it is a short read, it is also a pleasantly poignant escape from the stark reality of our world today. The reader is guided through a story line of a short-sighted, ego-driven character who strives to be school President and the mindset he uses to get there. Sometimes in the midst of chaos it is healthy to just step back and laugh at the folly of it all. This book did that for me. Kudos Mr. Rozniecki, I have a feeling we will need more of this in our very near future." I've had some fun with the trending hashtags #TakeAKnee, #StephenCurry, #StevenSeagal, and #LouHoltz on Twitter over the past few days. Here are my posts, ordered from the most popular to the least popular (all my tweets can be viewed here - https://twitter.com/CraigRozniecki ): 1) What's more patriotic, blindly singing "the land of the free" or fighting to make that a reality? The Red, White, and Clueless

Change is hard. Whether it be a new school, a new job, a new relationship, or a new kid, it's next to impossible to fully adjust and adapt to this major lifestyle change in an immediate fashion. This is especially the case as we age. However, more times than not, at the end of the day, we find a way to make the necessary changes and move forward with life, because for as much as we'd like it to at times, the world doesn't stop for the sake of our hardships. Life changes are inevitable, though, so while we may despise the mere sight of them whenever they arrive on the scene, we're cognizant of their seemingly constant presence, and go on to begrudgingly erase our old life formula, replace it with a new one, accept it, and move forward. While these life formulas may be written in pencil, however, after a certain point in time, beliefs are written in pen, and for as difficult as it may be to quickly adjust and adapt to major life changes, it seems to be doubly as difficult

Kudos to Geno Auriemma

For those of you unfamiliar with women's college basketball, the name Geno Auriemma may not ring a bell. Sports fan or not, however, what I'm about to share about the man will undoubtedly win over some new admirers. First off, Geno Auriemma has coached the UConn (Connecticut) women's basketball team for 32 years. His resumé has reached the point where it's not even debatable anymore to say this man is one of the greatest coaches in sports history. In the past 24 years, Auriemma's Huskies have won 11 national titles, gone to the Final Four 6 additional times, the Elite Eight 5 others, and a pair of Sweet Sixteens. So, in the past 2.5 decades, Auriemma's squad has fared no worse than the top 16 in the country, has been one of the four best teams near 75% of the time, and has come close to winning 50% of the national championships. So to say Geno Auriemma has been dominant as a head coach in women's college basketball and deserves praise for his long list of

What I learned in Week 3 of the NFL season...

In Week 3 of the NFL season, I learned that... - ..., if I had only picked the underdogs, I would have finished 10-5. - ...Joe Flacco will always pick Disneyland over Wembley Stadium. - ...I should never accept a high-five from Von Miller - ...anytime they hear a person say, "You know, football is a game of inches," Detroit Lions players will line up like the scene from Airplane and beat the crap of him. - ...the Pittsburgh Steelers may want to step onto the field at some point after the singing of the national anthem. - ..., in Philadelphia, 61 is the new 2-1. - ...Odell Beckham may ask for an arm amputation to make the art of catching more challenging. - ..., after falling to 0-3 courtesy of some Aaron Rodgers magic, the Cincinnati Bengals can do anything but R-E-L-A-X. - ...Jay Cutler may want to think about going back to the announcing booth. - ...it took the president calling player protesters "sons of b*tches" for NFL owners to understand

Oscar the Grouch called Rex Reed and told him to cheer up...

Throughout my adult life, I've been about as big of a fan of movie critic Rex Reed as Oscar the Grouch has been a fan of morning people with the last name of Sunshine. Sadly, when comparing the two, Oscar appears to be the more pleasant of the two specimens. Before delving into my most recent beef with Mr. Reed, here's a brief list of his past controversies: - For the South Korean film Oldboy , Reed wrote, "What else can you expect from a nation weaned on kimchi, a mixture of raw garlic and cabbage buried underground until it rots, dug up from the grave and then served in earthenware pots sold at the Seoul airport as souvenirs?" - With regard to the Melissa McCarthy movie  Identity Thief , Reed described the lead actress of the film with the following words: "tractor-sized," "humongous," "obese," and a "hippo." - Reed was called out by The L Magazine 's Henry Stewart for his review of the 2012 film The Cabin in the W

My book, "The Art of the Steal," just received another 5-star review

Simultaneously defending and bashing Donald Trump's latest controversial tweet

As he seems to do on a daily basis, Donald Trump came under fire today for retweeting a doctored video of him knocking Hillary Clinton over with a golf ball. Some on the right have defended the president as a "fun guy" and that we all need to lighten up. Some on the left have claimed the tweet proves Trump is a misogynist. In my opinion, both sides are stretching here, Republicans need to stop defending the president, and Democrats need to focus their attention on other things. I don't think it can even be debated anymore; Donald Trump is a sexist. With exceptions, the president typically views women as nothing more than sex symbols, whose sole purpose is to please men's eyes and loins. Having said that, however, what President Trump despises even more than giving women credit based on their actual merits is losing or being called out for being wrong. Donald Trump holds stronger grudges than a teenager nicknamed Sir Grudge-a-Lot. There's a reason why he continua

The Paradoxical BMI

While I've long been a critic of the BMI (Body Mass Index), I was still shocked to see my latest such score when stepping on the scale at a recent doctor's appointment. At 5'9'', I weighed 200 lbs., which translates to a BMI score of 30, and registers as borderline obese according to the BMI chart. When looking at the increasingly popular waist-to-height ratio, as I have a 32'' waist, I registered at a 46.38, which is categorized as "healthy." Not only that, but my score was closer to "healthy slim" (42%) than "overweight" (53%). For one to be considered "obese," their ratio has to be at least 63%. Lastly, I checked out a body fat calculator. My numbers resulted in a score of 10.99%, which is categorized as "athletes," less than half the percentage of what is considered to be "obese" (25%+). So, let me get this straight. According to the traditional BMI chart, I'm borderline obese. Accordi

What really happened?

In light of Hillary Clinton's new book, What Happened , being released unto the public this week, every cable news personality and their dog have echoed its title, asking one another, "So, what really did happen?" and "Who's to blame for what happened?" The responses have typically been fairly predictable, with Republicans blaming Clinton and Clinton die-hards placing the onus of the blame on James Comey and Bernie Sanders. While it's extremely common and perfectly understandable for both sides to try and find the ultimate scapegoat for the end result, as is often the case, reality dictates that blame should be properly spread among multiple sources. I'm sorry, but all this deflection of blame is getting to be tiresome. It's about time each and every person responsible for what happened on election day 10 months ago admit to such and learn from it, so the cycle doesn't repeat itself in the future. Hillary Clinton: There's no doubt abo

Climate change-denier Jim Inhofe claims the offseason proves balls aren't juiced in the major leagues

A tape has just surfaced of Oklahoma senator and man voted most likely to throw a snowball in a January blizzard to disprove global warming, Jim Inhofe, making a speech on November 17th of last year, his birthday, directed toward ESPN, baseball writers and commentators in particular. The tape, leaked and introduced by ESPN's own Chris Berman, went like this: "'Hi, I'm Chris Berman of ESPN, former host of NFL Primetime , bringing you a video of Republican Senator Jim 'Jack Me' Inhofe telling the world what he thinks about the juiced-ball theory in major league baseball. Let's have a listen...' 'Has anyone heard about this juiced-ball theory in baseball we've got going on? Some people are saying, because of all the home runs that were hit this season, the ball must be juiced, whatever that means. What a bunch of hogwash! It's been what, two, three weeks since the season ended? Have you heard about any home runs recently? No? Me neither! I

Democrats need to stop pointing fingers and start moving forward

Ten months after election day, fourteen months before the 2018 midterms, and Democrats continue to point fingers at one another for the major losses they suffered in 2016 and beyond. While we can't deny what took place in the 2016 election, the last thing we need is to continue dividing the party by deflecting blame, instead of taking responsibility, attempting to learn from our mistakes, and fighting like hell to win Senate and House seats in a little over a year! Almost a year after the election, I'm still hearing Clinton supporters crying, "Bernie divided the party and hurt Hillary's image!," while I continue to hear Sanders supports claiming, "Hey, Bernie would have won! Just sayin'!" Look, as a Sanders voter myself, I have a hunch he would have fared better in the general election than did Clinton, but that theory is neither here nor there, because the election is over. Hillary Clinton was the Democratic nominee and Donald Trump is the president
