This question has been asked time and again by sports' "analysts". Should quarterback Michael Vick alter his playing style due to his running the football leaving him more prone to injury than most other NFL quarterbacks?
This was in light of Vick suffering a concussion in last week's game. He suffered a broken hand in today's game. I suppose it's a legitimate question to ask, but it's not Vick's leaving the pocket and running with the football which has left him susceptible to injury. The concussion occurred when Vick was hit in the pocket last week after throwing the football. He was thrown into an offensive lineman and two players' helmets connected with one another's, Vick receiving the brunt of the hit. So, Vick's unique style as an NFL quarterback played absolutely no part in his injury a week ago. Also, today, the pain was felt when he was in the pocket. The Eagles' offensive line did not pass protect well and their quarterback got leveled time and again. So, once again, his playing style had nothing to do with the pain that was felt throughout the course of the game.
If Vick suffers a hamstring strain or something of the sort which would limit his being able to run with the football very successfully, then sure, the guy should alter his playing style. Until that point, however, I see his speed, elusiveness and escape ability benefiting the quarterback's health. For a starting quarterback in the National Football League, Vick is a bit undersized, at 6'0'', maybe 200 lbs. When he gets hit by 300 lb. linemen, chances are he's going to feel those very hits more than many other quarterbacks in the league. Vick's speed and elusiveness allows him to limit those hits by escaping pressure and running out of bounds. So, no, until Vick loses his speed and/or is suffering from some kind of leg injury, I don't see any reason for him to alter his playing style.
