Twitter trending-hashtag posts (2/18-2/28)

As I do every couple of weeks or so, I thought I'd share my Twitter trending-hashtag posts. These are from February 18th through today, February 28th. Here they are, ordered from the most popular to the least popular (all my tweets can be viewed at this link - https://twitter.com/CraigRozniecki ): 1) Rep. Meadows: "I brought a black woman here to dispute your claim that Donald Trump is a racist. I'm not going to let her speak. I'm just going to show her as a prop, because I'm classy like that - and not racist!" #CohenHearing #Snark 2,316 Likes, 747 Retweets 2) I believe in science, facts, and equality. I believe in building bridges, not walls. I believe a government's purpose is to represent and help the people, not themselves. I believe no one is above the law. #ImTheRadicalLeft. 1,965 Likes, 483 Retweets 3) Jim Jordan: "Elijah Cummings will always be identified by this hearing!" ...and Jim Jordan will always be identified by letting

Time to move past 2016 and onto 2020

We're over two years removed from the 2016 presidential election and I still witness regular bickering between die-hard Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders supporters. Not only that, I hear seemingly constant scapegoating on who's to blame for Donald Trump's election victory. First off, no matter how oddly cathartic it might be to vilify one party as the sole reason for Donald Trump's election victory, it's simply not true and it does us no service to go this scapegoating-route when looking ahead to the future. Bernie Sanders, Jill Stein, James Comey, the media, and Russia may have all played a part in Donald Trump being named president, but no single entity can realistically be fully blamed for it, and what good does it do us to obsess over what/whom we perceive to be said scapegoat? How will this clinging-onto-negative-history mentality help us defeat Donald Trump in the 2020 election? Simple answer - it won't. Like it or not, we have to finally accept what

Don Jr. gets an "A" in riding coattails, an "F" in math

Donald Trump, Jr. took to Twitter to defend his father's record on minorities, as he posted this tweet: "If over his entire presidency Obama had accomplished 10% of what @realDonaldTrump for these groups the left would anoint him emperor for life. When Trump does it in less than 2 years it's Blah Blah Blah. What a joke!" I think it's safe to assume Don Jr. is speaking in reference to the fact that unemployment among African-Americans is at the lowest rate ever recorded, dipping to under 6%. But as usual, a Trump isn't telling the whole story and is largely taking credit for someone else's work. Like every other demographic, black unemployment rose during the Great Recession, peaking at above 15% in 2010. It's been going down ever since, dipping to 12.5% in 2013, 10% in 2015, and roughly 7.5% when Obama left office. So black unemployment went from 17.5% to 7.5% under President Obama, a decrease of 57%. Meanwhile, it's decreased from 7.5% to 6%

Jaclyn Cashman is the embarrassment, not Joe Biden

Boston Herald columnist Jaclyn Cashman recently wrote an article entitled, "Joe Biden's the real embarrassment, not America," and I'm here to tell her she's wrong, that she's the embarrassment, not Joe Biden. Cashman began her article by saying this: "Taking a page from Barack Obama's playbook, Joe Biden - ahead of his presidential announcement - goes to Europe and apologizes for America. Biden calls our country an 'embarrassment' for separating families at the border crossing. Never mind that the Obama administration, in which Biden served as vice president, also ramped up deportation - sending millions of illegal immigrants back where they came from. Biden is actively trying to rewrite his legacy on immigration." As well-renowned fact-checker FactCheck.org said with regard to the "apology-tour" claim conservatives like to use, "Although it has been a consistent applause line, the claim doesn't hold up when match

Dotard Dershowitz Strikes Again!

Former respected attorney and current Trump ass-kisser, Alan Dershowitz, recently made his thoughts known on Covington Catholic High School student Nick Sandmann and his family's $250 million lawsuit against  The Washington Post  for libel. Speaking on Hill.TV's  Rising , Dershowitz said the following: "I think they have a reasonable case, I mean the world was guilty of libel. These poor kids seemed to be doing exactly the right thing, and then suddenly because they are thought to be white, privileged kids, suddenly everyone's ganging up on them. I'd be interested to see how the case unfolds. I mean they're asking for a lot of money, I don't think that's going to be taken too seriously. But I do think that they have a significant case and it will be interesting to see how the Post defends against their reporting in the case. It's important to air this issue out in the public, and one of the functions that a suit like this has is to lay it all out

The Covington Catholic high school study: "fake report"

The mainstream media is a fickle beast, especially in the 24-hour news era. Take the Covington Catholic high school controversy, where students from the Kentucky school, donned in MAGA gear, appeared to harass and mock a Native American veteran following a March to Life rally. The media reported it as such. Then video was released of a small group of black Hebrew Israelites throwing insults at both the students and Native Americans, which was believed to have started the series of events. So most in the media changed their narratives from "These kids are to blame" to "These black Hebrew Israelites are to blame." Some went the Swiss hippie route and decided to say, "Hey, man, all sides took a part in this, so like yeah..." The student at the front and center of the controversy, Nick Sandmann, hired legal representation to write him a refutation to the media's initial narrative, contending they and the before-mentioned Native American, Nathan Phillips, w

Rest in Power: The Trayvon Martin Story

I binge-watched the docu-series Rest in Power: The Trayvon Martin Story the other day. While I had been fairly well versed on the story, I wasn't fully versed and came away learning a number of things from the 6-part series. First off, while the series was expectantly sad and often times anger-inducing, it was rather interesting, educational, and I'd recommend people to check it out to, at the very least, garner a different perspective of the events. When it comes to the events, while comparisons to the O.J. Simpson trial were made during the course of the series, I only see a partial resemblance. In the Simpson trial, I feel the LAPD slipped up to such a grand extent, the jury was right to rule the prosecution didn't prove their case against the former NFL star beyond a reasonable doubt, thus declaring him as "not guilty." I also haven't been convinced one way or the other on his level of guilt or innocence with regard to his murder charges. Yes, I may be

Trump's approval increases after the pointless shutdown he started ended

During the 35-day government shutdown, the longest in this country's history, Donald Trump saw his approval rating drop to 37% in Gallup polls. The latest round of Gallup polls were just released this week and it showed Trump's post-shutdown approval rating was up 7 points to 44%. Upon seeing this, my first reaction was, "WTF?!? Are people really this stupid?!?" Considering the fact we elected this man president at all, I suppose it should be obvious by now that answer is a resounding yes! Let's think about this for a moment. Congress passed a bipartisan, nearly unanimous budget bill which Donald Trump said he was going to sign. After receiving some heat from right-wing talking heads like Ann Coulter and Rush Limbaugh, Trump changed his mind at the last moment and decided to shut down the government until he received the money he initially wanted to build a southern border wall. The shutdown lasted a record-setting 35 days, where hundreds of thousands, if not mi

Douche of the Week: Eric Porterfield

Republican West Virginia delegate Eric Porterfield has come under fire for his recent comments about the LGBTQ community. For those of you who have never heard of him, it's probably all for the best, because the guy is as good as resigned at this point. Over the past week, Porterfield has made the following comments on multiple occasions: - "The LGBTQ - not homosexual, but the LGBTQ - is the closest thing to political terrorism in America." - "The LGBT is the most socialist group in this country. They do not protect gays. There are many gays they persecute if they do not line up with their social ideology." - "The LGBTQ is a modern day version of the Ku Klux Klan, without wearing hoods with their antics of hate." - "Let me very clear with my statement, the LGBTQ - not homosexuals - are the modern day version of the Ku Klux Klan." - "They are socialist in nature, they exercise economic extortion, they terrorize and frighten pe

Not every critique of Israel is anti-Semitic

Freshman Representative Ilhan Omar has come under scrutiny for a pair of tweets she posted over the weekend. Members of both parties have called her messages "anti-Semitic," to which she's now apologized. Delving deeper into the matter, though, were her posts actually anti-Semitic? I don't think they were and think politicians need to do a better job of looking at sensitive matters like anti-Semitism with nuance and not a black-and-white mentality. Rep. Omar's first tweet came in response to the following Glenn Greenwald post: "GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy threatens punishment for @IlhanMN and @RashidaTlaib over their criticisms of Israel. It's stunning how much time US political leaders spend defending a foreign nation even if it means attacking free speech rights of Americans." Ms. Omar responded with, "It's all about the Benjamins baby" When asked about who she was referring to, Omar said, "AIPAC!" (American Israel Pub

Racism on IMDb.com

I started noticing this a while ago, but am beginning to realize what I observed wasn't just an aberration; it was a trend. Black entertainment on IMDb.com tends to be rated much lower by members than by actual critics. I just binge-watched the docu-series Rest in Power: The Trayvon Martin Story . On RottenTomatoes.com , the series received a perfect approval rating of 100% and averaged to score a 7.8/10 grade from critics. On IMDb.com, the show's average grade was 4.6/10. Here is a breakdown of how some critically acclaimed black shows and films have been scored on IMDb.com.
