Hindsight is 20/20, even in college football...

Being born and raised in the Cornhusker state that is Nebraska, I know all about college football teams' rampant fans hollering for head coaching changes when their team doesn't reach their typically unrealistic expectations. After the Cornhuskers finished their 2017 campaign at a disappointing 4-8, it was all but inevitable a change would again be made. This will be their 5th different head coach over the past 14 years. Oddly enough, Nebraska's head coaching version of musical chairs started in 2003, after Frank Solich led the team to a 9-3 season, the best record the team's had in the past 14 years. So, in hindsight, perhaps Nebraska pulled the trigger a bit too quickly on firing Solich. That got me to thinking about other such institutions who haven't been as successful in recent years as they had been under a particular coach previously. Here's how those numbers pan out. I'll start with the program which has experienced the lowest drop-off in terms of wi

In defense of Greg Schiano as a college football coach...

Before the outcry over his alleged ties to former Penn State assistant coach Jerry Sandusky, Tennessee Volunteers fans were hitting social media over the reported hire of ex-Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano, criticizing his 68-67 record at the New Jersey school. First off, Yahoo's Dan Wetzel, who has covered the Sandusky case more extensively than possibly anybody else, called the charges against Schiano "random, nonspecific (disputed) hearsay." Secondly, Schiano's 68-67 record at Rutgers might be more impressive than Phillip Fulmer's 152-52 record at Tennessee. In the 86 years prior to Schiano's arrival, Rutgers got invited to 1 bowl game. This occurred in 1978, 23 years before Schiano arrived as coach on campus. In the 11 seasons prior to his arrival, the Scarlet Knights went a combined 40-56-1 (.412), and as I alluded to earlier, were invited to 0 bowl games. After Schiano's departure, the team has gone 33-43 (.434), including a 10-26 (.278) record the

Due to a physical injury and boredom the other day, I decided to start my own hashtag on Twitter, #TrumpYourThanksgiving, and have a little fun with it. What I learned in Week 11 of the NFL season...

In Week 11 of the NFL season, I learned that... - ...Jerry Jones will likely file a lawsuit against the NFL for unfairly matching his team up with a superior foe in Dallas on Sunday night football. - ...Bill Belichick has just as much fashion sense in Mexico as he does in the United States. - ...Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott is the odds-on favorite to one day become the face of the Darwin Awards. - ..., even while he's sleeping, grabbing nothing but his own balls, Nathan Peterman finds a way to get intercepted. - ..., of the 130 FBS college football teams, the Cleveland Browns would be underdogs against 120 of them. - ...a broken condom said, "Well, I wasn't very effective," and the Denver Broncos offense responded with, "Hold my beer." - ..., when asked about Jay Cutler, Denny Green said, "He is who we thought he was!" - ...the New York Giants can only find the end zone by kicking a piece of pigskin over it between two ye

Al Franken vs. Roy Moore is an apples vs. underdeveloped oranges argument

Over the past week and a half, seven women have come forward about Alabama Senate nominee Roy Moore sexually harassing and/or assaulting them, most of whom were 14- to 16-years-old at the time. In response, many leaders on both sides of the aisle, including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, have asked Moore to step down before next month's special election. Two days ago, Minnesota Senator Al Franken was alleged to have groped a woman while she was asleep, which can be seen via this photo -  http://www.startribune.com/al-franken-sent-me-personal-apology-letter-after-kissing-groping-report-leeann-tweeden-says/458254343/ . In response to the Franken incident, Senator McConnell and many others, while disapproving of the senator's behavior, tended to react less strongly than to the allegations made against Mr. Moore. Moore cried "double standard!' at this. Not to be outdone, President Trump, while criticizing Franken in a series of tweets, has remained mum with regard

The American Guilt Paradox

With all of these sexual harassment and assault allegations coming to fruition in recent weeks, we've continually been told, "Always believe the accusers." As a victim of sexual abuse myself, I tend to agree with those sentiments. However, given the fact that, in a court of law, we're told to treat a defendant as innocent until proven guilty, this mentality serves as quite the perplexing paradox. If we were to combine the two, it'd read, "One is innocent until proven guilty, but always believe the accusers" or "Always believe the accusers, yet one is innocent until proven guilty." Like I said, perplexing... So how do we walk that fine line? How do we not publicly convict a person before they've had their fair trial, yet also take an accuser's words seriously? Is that even possible? If I always believe the accuser, I'll see the alleged perpetrator as guilty until proven innocent. If I always view the alleged perpetrator as innocent

Appreciating the talent while despising the person

Over the past couple of weeks, it's become an almost daily occurrence for a Hollywood celebrity to get accused of sexual misconduct. Even without using Google as a guide, here's a list of the names I can remember getting "outed" for such conduct over the past couple weeks or so: Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey, Dustin Hoffman, Louis C.K., James Toback, Ben Affleck, Charlie Sheen, Andy Dick, Jeremy Piven, etc. While many these celebrities' current and future projects have been jeopardized due the allegations, and rightly so, what is the proper response from the public? Is there one? Is it possible to admire the talent of an artist, yet despise him (or her) on a personal level? Right or wrong, I've never viewed Hollywood celebrities with the same lens as I do the general population. From the excessive amounts of make-up, to the liberal use of plastic surgery, to the fact many get paid millions of dollars to portray someone else, Hollywood celebrities have alway

What I learned in Week 10 of the NFL season...

In Week 10 of the NFL season, I learned that... - ...Buffalo Bills quarterback Tyrod Taylor apparently plays all eleven positions on defense as well. - ...the Chicago Bears' magic winning formula is for Mitch Trubisky to attempt no more than 9 passes. - ..., if he had coached Boston College during Doug Flutie's Hail Mary play, Cleveland Browns head coach Hue Jackson would have called for a quarterback sneak. - ..., since the New Orleans Saints have learned to run the football, armageddon is officially upon us. - ..., even if the Jacksonville Jaguars were spotted 49 points to start a game, Blake Bortles would manage to make it close. - ...the New York Giants would be better off if head coach Ben McAdoo were replaced by Mr. Magoo. - ...nothing spells q-u-a-r-t-e-r-g-a-s-m like Ryan Fitzpatrick vs. Josh McCown. - ...A.J. If people voted...

As long time readers should know, I've long been an opponent of the electoral college. Votes in Wyoming shouldn't count for more than votes in California. It should be one person, one vote. Period. In saying that, however, while I'm a stark opponent of the electoral college, I've gotta say, if Democrats actually went out and voted, we'd be next to impossible to stop. Here's how party affiliation numbers break down state by state: Alabama (9 electoral votes): 52% Rep (Republican), 35% Dem (Democrat), 17% difference (Rep 9, Dem 0) Alaska (3 EVs): 39% Rep, 32% Dem, 7% diff (Rep 12, Dem 0) Arizona (11 EVs): 40% Rep, 39% Dem, 1% diff (Rep 23, Dem 0) Arkansas (6 EVs): 46% Rep, 38% Dem, 8% diff (Rep 29, Dem 0) California (55 EVs): Dem 49%, Rep 30%, 19% diff (Dem 55, Rep 29) Colorado (9 EVs): Dem 42%, Rep 41%, 1% diff (Dem 64, Rep 29) Connecticut (7 EVs): Dem 50%, Rep 32%, 18% diff (Dem 71, Rep 29) Delaware (3 EVs): Dem 55%, Rep 29%, 26% diff (Dem 74, Re

Rick Perry with another "oops" moment...

The Secretary of Energy, Rick Perry, has never been coy about making ridiculously stupid comments. Here are just a few of his greatest hits: - "From my own personal life, abstinence works." - "It's (Evolution) a theory that's out there. It's got some gaps in it." - "Juarez (Mexico) is reported to be the most dangerous city in America." - "Those of you that will be 21 by November the 12th, I ask for your support and your vote." - I will tell you: It's three agencies of government, when I get there, that are gone: Commerce, Education and the- what's the third one there? Let's see.... OK. So Commerce, Education and the- I can't. The third one, I can't. Sorry. Oops." Speaking at an Axios/NBC News event, Perry had himself another "oops" moment, when he said this: "[Electricity is important] from the standpoint of sexual assault. When the lights are on, when you have light that shines th

Don Jr. teaches his daughter about what he believes socialism to be...

Donald Trump Jr. continues to showcase that the "bigly" stupid gene runs in the family, as he has again illustrated he knows as much about socialism as a dog named Lucky knows about kama sutra. On Halloween, the president's son tweeted a picture of his daughter Chloe holding up a half full/half empty bowl of candy, adding the words, "I'm going to take half of Chloe's candy tonight & give it to some kid who sat at home. It's never to early to teach her about socialism." Apparently there is such a thing as TOO late to teach him about socialism, well, and English/spelling. Let me get this straight; on a day when kids all over the country knock on neighbors' and strangers' doors, asking for free candy, Don Jr. stealing half that candy from his own daughter and giving it to a kid at home is an example of socialism? As Mandy Patinkin said in The Princess Bride , "I do not think that word means what you think it means." Let's b

What I learned in Week 9 of the NFL season...

In Week 9 of the NFL season, I learned that... - ...Joe Flacco may be going to "f*cking Disneyland" early this year. - ...Eli Manning may soon gear up in a full-body condom for added protection. - ...the Seattle Seahawks secondary may not have eaten enough Butterfingers on Halloween. - ...Alex Smith and Tyreek Hill have answered the age-old question, "How can you turn a Hail Mary into a 20-yard pass toward the middle of the field?" - ..., after their Thursday night game, players from both the Buffalo Bills and New York Jets likely threw a we're-better-now-without-Rex-Ryan party. - ..., for as poorly as they've played in his absence, the Packers' Aaron Rodgers may now be the frontrunner for the "literal" MVP award. - ...Philadelphia and St. Louis just scored again. - ...dyslexic Giants fans are asking New Orleans if they can borrow the "Aint's" nickname. - ...A.J. Green's motto is, "If you can't beat

A new book on the horizon!

I've been hard at work at finishing and releasing at least one new book before the holidays. Fortunately, I think I will be able to finish and release at least one in that time. After I complete the cover and double- and triple-check everything (again), I'll make the book available for purchase in both paperback and Kindle form. The book will be titled, A Collection of Satirical Short Stories: A Bigly Clever Title , and yes, the title is aptly named. I'll be certain to keep everyone up-to-date as I progress through this process. Also be on the lookout for The Kind-Hearted Smarta*s: Volume 3 and LOL at the GOP: Volume 7 in the coming months, not to mention another couple of shorter reads I have cooking up in the ol' noggin here. Stay tuned!

It's Election Day! Get out and vote!

Apathy and misinformation gave us the Donald Trump presidency. Let's allow that to be a turning point in our history, where apathy transformed into passion, gullibility got replaced by research and knowledge, and the embarrassment in the White House saw his power erode! Let's make our voices heard, get out and vote, and make change happen! We may all say we want change, but change can only start now if we make our voices heard on election day! So get out there and vote! Let's make change happen together! You can find information about your state's ballot, polling locations, and times here: https://www.headcount.org/voter-info/

I just broke some Twitter records!

Sadly, it seems I continue to break Twitter records for likes and retweets after horrendous events. That too was the case this last week, following the terror attack in Manhattan, where I posted this: "Manhattan attack: 8 killed, 11 injured Trumpsters: 'Muslims are evil! Let's kick them out now!'
