Before she was elected as Senator of Iowa, Joni Ernst got into an interesting discussion with Charles Pierce from Esquire magazine.
After a speech where Ms. Ernst referred to President Obama as "apathetic," the following exchanged between the reporter and newly elected Senator:
Pierce asked what she meant about the president being "apathetic"
Ernst: "He is just standing back and letting things happen, he is reactive rather than proactive. With Ebola, we see he's very hands-off. He's not leading. He's not leading."
Pierce: "What should he have done about Ebola? One person in America has Ebola."
Ernst: "OK, you're the press, you're giving me your opinion."
Pierce: "But that's not an opinion. It's a fact. Only one person in America has Ebola."
Ernst: "But he is the leader. What he can do is make sure that all of those agencies are coordinating together and make sure that he is sharing that information with the American people, that he cares about their safety."
Pierce: "So he doesn't care about the people with the disease?"
Ernst: "I don't know that he does, he hasn't demonstrated that... I'm sorry. I'm done. Anybody else?"
Ernst, like many other members of the far-right, appears to have a problem distinguishing opinions from facts. Given her response to Charles Pierce's question, expect Senator Ernst to utter the following at some point during her first term in office:
- "You seriously think Des Moines is the capital of Iowa? Well, that's like your opinion, man."
- "I'm not going to get into this discussion with you! It's simply your opinion that 7 x 7 = 49."
- "Rene Descartes said, 'I think therefore I am'? Whatever. That's just your opinion."
- "For anyone that thinks my name is Joni Ernst, that is entirely their opinion!"
- "If you don't think I'm very smart, that's probably a fact, but whatever."
