So, Tim Tebow is now a New York Jet. It's pretty crazy how it appears as if this move has garnered more attention than Peyton Manning signing with the Denver Broncos. Here we have Manning, one of the greatest quarterbacks of the contemporary era, if not of all-time and then Tim Tebow - one of the statistically worst quarterbacks in all of the NFL last year. How in the world is a backup quarterback, Tebow, garnering more media attention than a Hall-of-Fame starting quarterback in Manning?
Well, any sane person would recognize that the Broncos made a great move, but what about the Jets? In my estimation, probably not. Starting quarterback Mark Sanchez gets rattled easily it seems and with Tebow breathing down his neck (figuratively, of course, unless Tim is a tad bit on the creepy side, but I'm not thinking that's the case), he'll feel the pressure two-fold. Like with Kyle Orton in Denver, if Sanchez struggles early in the season and the Jets aren't playing very well, there will be clamors of Tebow taking over the starting job. Who are quarterback controversies good for? Besides the media and perhaps opponents of these very teams? Nobody. I'm sure Tebow will be a class act, say all the right things, but let's get one thing straight - the guy wants to start. ...and while many fans and analysts don't see Tebow as a long-term starting NFL quarterback, if Sanchez struggles, the fans will be screaming Tebow's name. Sanchez has been on pretty thin ice with the fans in New York as it is and whether these fans are a believer in Tebow or not, it won't matter. They'll start chanting Tim Tebow. Now, as long as Sanchez plays well, the Jets win and Tebow can be used sparingly as a change-up for defenses to think about, then all will be temporarily well in New York, but I have a hard time seeing that happen. All NFL quarterbacks struggle at times. The Jets will lose some games. When either (and both) of these things occur, Tebow die-hards will start making their voices heard on the matter and the quantity of said voices will grow the more one or both of those elements occur.
I will say that it's going to be quite an interesting season for the Jets. We have head coach, Mr. Foul Mouth himself. We have the ever-so-sensitive, improving, yet unproven Mark Sanchez behind center. We have the uber-religious, hard-working, lucky, mechanically-awful yet very popular Tim Tebow behind him. We have the New York fans and media. Ah...this has reality television show written all over it. Where's the popcorn?
