Another dumb politically-themed meme

I just read a politically-themed meme on Facebook last night and felt the need to respond. It said this:

"Just because we don't support your liberal, anti-God amoral agenda does not make us:

'Ignorant, racists, bigots, hillbillies, uneducated, haters (,) inbreds, morons...

It simply means we think for ourselves, honor God and love our country."

No, it actually doesn't... Actually, this meme does exactly what it attempts to refute. It makes the poster sound ignorant/uneducated/moronic (kind of redundant, don't you think)?

According to this poster, to be liberal is to be anti-God, and to be liberal is to be amoral. The term "liberal" is not defined as such. "Liberal" is defined as being "favorable to progress or reform." So, how is it amoral to believe in progress or reform, and how does this make a person "anti-God"? Is a person anti-God if he or she doesn't believe in him/her/it? Is a person anti-God if they don't live by the standards set forth in the Bible? In the Old Testament? New Testament? What conservatives deem to be true? I'm going to need more specifics here...

Just because a person isn't a self-described "liberal," that doesn't make him or her "ignorant," "racist," etc. That is true. However, that sounds like a failing fallacy from a college Creative Thinking course. Just because one is a conservative, that doesn't mean they're ignorant or racist. It's not like we hear the following conversation very often:

Liberal: "So, where to you lean on the political spectrum?"

Conservative: "Oh, I have been and always will be a conservative."

Liberal: "So, you're a racist then? I gotcha..."

However, when a large group of conservatives fight to take away voting rights from minorities, put a halt to immigration reform, take away programs from those battling poverty (many of whom are minorities), downplay slavery, believe President Obama is a foreigner, make derogatory remarks towards him and other minorities, etc., it's difficult not to cast that as racism. While most conservatives are racist, most racists are conservative.

Lastly, since it appears the poster doesn't have an iota of knowledge pertaining to the actual definition of the term "liberal," I'm not sure how the final line makes a bit of sense either. So, according to this person, if a person isn't liberal, he or she can think for themselves, honors God, and loves their country. If one is entirely invested in God, though, how can they possibly think for themselves? Also, how can it be concluded that a person whom believes in moving the country forward loves it any less than a person whom believes in keeping things the same? Does a person love themselves less if they try to improve their life than one whom doesn't strive to make such changes?

No, being a conservative doesn't make a person ignorant, but this meme sure didn't help the cause any...

Boycotting jukeboxes because of TouchTunes

I love music and enjoy hitting the bar(s) over the weekend, so naturally, when the mood strikes me, I've never been coy about playing some songs on the jukebox. This past Thursday, a friend of mine turned 50, so several friends of her's, including myself, all met up to celebrate the occasion. At around 9:30, a friend of mine and I both chipped in $5 to play some songs on the jukebox. Four hours and 231 skips later, we gave up on hearing the songs we had selected, and went home knowing we had just wasted $5. This wasn't the first time such a thing had happened to me (and many others), and due to that, I'll be boycotting jukeboxes. Why? The scam known as TouchTunes. You see, here's how the plot typically breaks down. A person (or group of people) downloads the TouchTunes app on his/her phone, consumes one too many adult beverages, and due to this, has less care for spending extra money to hear the songs of their choosing right NOW. That's the thing with TouchTun...

The difference between "looking" and "checking out"

I may be way off with these numbers, but it's my approximation that at least 75% of individuals whom are involved in a serious relationship feel it's perfectly acceptable to "check out" members of the opposite sex they're not involved with. Meanwhile, approximately 25% either don't feel this is acceptable or aren't sure about the matter. I hadn't thought about this matter for a while, but since I've been dating a woman for about 8 months, the topic has been pondered about some. When reading or hearing others discuss this very issue, I often times hear comments similar to the following: "It's human nature to look." "There's nothing wrong with checking others out. I'm sure he/she does it too!" "It's fine to do it. Just don't tell your boyfriend/girlfriend about it or do it in front of them!" "It's natural to find people attractive." When observing the array of comments, I i...
