Power 5 Conference Breakdown

We're rapidly closing in on bowl season in the world of college football, so as we ask around this time every year, "How do the Power 5 conferences compare to one another? Is one superior to the other four?" While the SEC has been seen in the eyes of many as the best conference in recent years, with the Pac-12 being the runner-up, these same individuals have claimed that the SEC has played second fiddle to the Big Ten this year. So is that the case? Let's look at the numbers... ACC Bowl eligible teams: 11 of 14 (78.6%) Record vs. Power 5 (and Notre Dame): 12-8 (.600) 12 wins 6 home and 6 away games ACC teams: 97-47 (.653) ACC opponents: 71-72 (.497) Difference: +0.156 Combined score: 432-260 (average of 36.0 - 21.7 = +14.3) 8 losses 4 home and 4 away games ACC teams: 48-36 (.571) ACC opponents: 49-46 (.516) Difference: +0.055 Combined score: 223-312 (average of 27.9 - 39.0 = -11.9) Overall 10 home and 10 away games ACC teams: 145-83 (.636) ACC ...

As Thursday is Thanksgiving and I'll be spending a great deal of time with friends and family over the next few days and will be unable to write much, I thought I'd wish all my readers/listeners/followers a very Happy Thanksgiving! I hope you are all able to travel safely, share several smiles and laughs with loved ones, avoid political debate at the dinner table, and see a light at the end of the tunnel as you reflect and realize for what all you're thankful. "The Electoral College is more fair!" No, it's actually not...

There's been a great deal of debate about the Electoral College since Donald Trump's victory last Tuesday night, for while he exceeded the necessary 270 electoral votes to win the presidency, he currently trails Hillary Clinton in the popular vote by over 1.3 million. Electoral College defenders continually say that the current system makes things more fair for the smaller, less populated states, as it prevents the larger states from having too great an influence on the results. Going through the math, I can say, without any hesitation, that's complete hogwash. Let's first take a look at the population and electoral vote count of all 50 states (as well as D.C.), and then showcase how many people one electoral vote represents. 1) California: 38,332,521, 55 EVs, 1 EV per 696,955 people 2) Texas: 26,448,193, 38 EVs, 1 EV per 696,005 3) New York: 19,651,127, 29 EVs, 1 EV per 677,625 4) Florida: 19,552,860, 29 EVs, 1 EV per 674,237 5) Illinois: 12,882,135, 20 EVs,...

A protest without a vote isn't a protest at all

What is it with NFL stars making political protests and then acknowledging they didn't vote in the election? San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who's been protesting the ill treatment of minorities during the National Anthem since the pre-season, recently made it known he didn't vote for either Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump in last Tuesday's election. Tampa Bay Buccaneers receiver Mike Evans sat during the anthem this past Sunday in protest of Donald Trump's election. What did he do on election day? Not a damn thing. I'm all for peaceful protests, but if all people do is talk and not vote, then as far as I see it, their talk means nothing. Look, I'm as disappointed as anybody that Donald Trump won the election last week, but I at least went out and voted and tried to back my talk with action. If those who voted for Gary Johnson, Jill Stein, Donald Trump (thinking he had no chance at winning), or didn't vote at all, are upset about Dona...

The Ultimate Slap in the Face

In response to the numerous protests at the expense of Donald Trump winning the presidential election on Tuesday night, I've heard Trump supporters continually utter the following remarks: - "He won. Get over it." - "What are you protesting? Democracy?" - "You don't see Obama or Clinton protesting now, do you?" So why is it that many Americans are having such trouble coming to grips that Donald Trump won our country's presidential election and are protesting as a result? A great number of Trump supporters have hailed their candidate's victory as the ultimate slap in the face to the political system and establishment politics, but fail to realize it's the ultimate slap in the face to so many others. Donald Trump's victory is a slap in the face to our men and women in uniform, including POWs. Donald Trump's victory is a slap in the face to our mothers, daughters, women all over. Donald Trump's victory is a slap i...

Cam Newton's complaints are valid

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton has received a great deal of heat from the press in recent weeks after he claimed he no longer feels safe while in the pocket and isn't having fun anymore. Well, I'm here to say Newton, like all other dual-threat quarterbacks, has a point. While I agree with many of these same critics that the NFL has gotten too protective of quarterbacks overall, dual-threat quarterbacks like Newton tend to be treated differently than traditional drop-back passers by officiating crews, and that's not right. I think this is largely due to many people, officials included, seeing quarterbacks like Newton as running backs behind center as opposed to actual quarterbacks. This shouldn't be the case, though. When a quarterback's behind the line-of-scrimmage, regardless if he has the speed of Michael Vick or Tom Brady, if he's hit in a manner which violates a league rule, the defense should be penalized. Newton might be bigger and quicker than m...

Colin Kaepernick doesn't vote, loses credibility

As readers know, I've been a defender of Colin Kaepernick's sideline National Anthem protests, for whether or not I agree with the message of a protester, so long as he or she is doing so peacefully, I believe in their right to protest. Having said that, though, the San Francisco 49ers quarterback lost a lot of credibility with me over the past week. While continuing to protest police brutality at the expense of blacks and the inequalities facing minority communities, Kaepernick didn't vote this past Tuesday. The 49ers QB may not have liked a few of the things Hillary Clinton said in the past, yet she was willing to meet with Black Lives Matter activists, talked about this country needing police and prison reform, and acknowledged the issues which Kaepernick were protesting were indeed legitimate. On the other side of the aisle was Donald Trump, a man who often referred to African-Americans as "the blacks;" pointed toward such an individual at a rally by saying, ...

It's time to abolish the Electoral College

So long as there aren't any major shifts in the states which have yet to be officially projected, it appears as though Republican nominee Donald Trump will end up with 306 electoral votes, compared to Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton's 232. Clinton leads in the popular vote, however, as she currently has 60,981,l18 votes, compared to 60,350,241 for Trump - over a 600,000 vote difference. With most of the remaining uncounted votes being in the blue states of New York, Washington, and California, it's predicted that Clinton will wind up with at least 2 million more votes than her opponent. If we made the Electoral College proportional, the results would currently be as follows: AK (3): Trump - 52.9%, Clinton - 37.7% (DT - 1.59 , HRC - 1.13) ID (4): Trump - 59.2%, Clinton - 27.6% (DT - 2.37, HRC - 1.10) MT (3): Trump - 56.5%, Clinton - 36.0% (DT - 1.70, HRC - 1.08) ND (3): Trump - 64.1%, Clinton - 27.8% (DT - 1.92, HRC - 0.83) WI (10): Trump - 47.9%, Clinton - 46.9...

The Blame Game of Hypotheticals

We're four days removed from the election, so as is often the case for the losing party, many progressives and Democrats alike are playing the blame game and asking the what ifs. Some are blaming FBI director James Comey. Others are blaming Bernie Sanders. Many are blaming Sanders' die-hard supporters. I can understand the disappointment and frustration. Trust me, I feel similarly. But while it's perfectly understandable to try and find a scapegoat for the disappointing results, we have to acknowledge the fact that there's plenty of blame to go around. I, for one, voted for Bernie Sanders in the Ohio Democratic Primary. I feel the man is a progressive hero and was better suited electorally to win a third consecutive term for the Democrats in the White House. But Hillary Clinton won the party's nomination and I was forced to choose between her and Donald Trump for president (sorry, but I wasn't going to waste my vote on either Jill Stein or Gary Johnson). To me,...

How do I reach those that have been brainwashed with hogwash?

I got into an interesting yet frustrating discussion the other night regarding the election. I was joined by two fellow "younger" progressives, as well as two more middle-aged conservatives. The two conservatives were "excited" about Donald Trump's election, while the three progressives often provided a WTF look in response to their seeming giddiness. Opinions were flung around faster than you can say "o-face," voices were raised, interruptions were frequent, and it came to the point where I felt the need to raise my hand so I could be called upon to speak. When I finally got my chance to talk, interruptions and denials were fast and frequent, before I finally spoke up about these rude breaks in my responses, and heard, "I'm/We're listening." This, of course, wasn't the case, and I feel is a key factor in our country's seemingly increasing problem of being (un)able to engage in civilized discourse with those on the other side ...

I'm sorry, but America is NOT a democracy

It's time we finally admit it - the United States of America is not a democracy. Sure, we may often like to brag about how we're the freest country in the world, that it's our duty to help spread our democratic principles to other parts of the globe, and even that we're the greatest country in recorded history. Unfortunately, our actions don't validate these words. A democracy is a "government by the people; a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised directly by them or by their elected agents under a free electoral system." Yet we continue to make it more difficult for certain demographics to vote on election day, we refuse to acknowledge the day as a national holiday (or at least hold it during the weekend), and at the end of the day, it's not a guarantee that the candidate with the most votes will be rewarded the presidency. Let's take this past election as a prime example. In this country, there ...

A dark day for America, but we can still find the light

Ever since it became apparent Donald Trump was going to be our next president, I've been going through a series of emotions: Sadness, anger, guilt, a fighter's mentality, a screw-it mindset, and back to sadness. I keep trying to find a silver-lining to Tuesday night's results, yet every time I do, I'm greeted with a heart-breaking story about how Trump's America could look tomorrow, let alone in 4 or 8 years. There's no other way to put it - when Donald Trump won on Tuesday night, America lost. We're now seen as a joke around the world (excluding Russia), and unfortunately, this joke is no laughing matter. Donald Trump is a showman first, a businessman second, and a politician last. Yes, that was a major charm to many of his supporters, but let's take off the blinders for a moment. Would we want a person with no construction experience to build our home? Would we want a man without any doctoral experience to be our surgeon? Would we want a woman withou...

Four new book reviews!

My new book, LOL at the GOP - Volume 6: Orange Is the New Crazy , has recently received four reviews. Here they are: 1)  "This book sums up Trump's run for President perfectly!! (5 out of 5 stars) First, I will say I'm Tracy Fort, Craig's partner on the Tracy and Craig Show. However, I'm capable of writing an impartial review. Craig is without a doubt one of the smartest and gifted people I know. I knew I made the right decision asking him to co-host the show. His brilliant mind is shown in his satirical writing. This book is a must buy for all political buffs. This will be a book we look back on and ask ourselves - HE really was the nominee??? In the book, the author charmed us with stories of the what if's and showed just how ridiculous Trump and the Republicans were. While satirical in humor, I just can see some of these conversations occurring. Gotta laugh to keep from crying type of thing. I can't recommend this book enough! I also suggest y...

We're Better Than That

Life. Liberty. The pursuit of happiness. Opportunity. Diversity. Acceptance. Dreams. Second chances. Love. Tradition. Togetherness. Progression. This is America, a great but imperfect nation - a nation that continues to grow, a nation of which I'm proud to be a part. Today we have a choice on which direction we'd like to see our great nation go. Some may refuse to take part in letting their voices be heard, as they take for granted what many others lack. If we all took this choice for granted, we'd cease to be given a choice at all. The only way we can be part of a democracy is if we actively participate in a democracy. So no matter in which direction you want to see this nation go, get out there and vote. Like with this country, we have two imperfect candidates, but that's where the similarities end. With Hillary Clinton, we have the known, the familiar, the experienced. She'll continue to build upon the 73 consecutive months of job growth we've seen ...
