Michael Vick was back in at quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles today, as Nick Foles was out with a broken hand. However, for how awful the Eagles defense played, it wouldn't have mattered whether Vick, Foles, or Johnny Unitas was the team's quarterback today, as the team lost 42-7 to the New York Giants to finish the season at 4-12.
Vick was quite rusty early in the game, as he completed only 2 of his first 5 passes (for 19 yards) and that included one interception. However, he finished fairly well, completing 17 of 32 passes for 178 additional yards and a touchdown. Overall, the offensive production was very average, if that. The team ran the ball with more success than they did a week ago, rushing for 110 yards on 27 carries (4.1 avg.), probably helped some by Vick's 5 carries for 25 yards (5.0 avg.). Like last week, tailback LeSean McCoy was one of the team's greatest receiving threats, catching 5 passes for 61 yards (12.2 avg), but like last week, only ran the ball 10 times for 45 yards (4.5 avg.). Vick's interception was the team's lone turnover.
The Eagles special teams was again below average in their performance. Their coverage unit was anything but stellar. Their return teams were average. Alex Henery missed his only field goal attempt. Punter Mat McBriar averaged about 40 yards per punt, including one getting into the end zone for a touchback and another being downed inside the 20.
The average offense and special teams units weren't what I'll remember about this game, though. No, it was horrible defense. The Giants racked up 21 points by the end of the 1st quarter and 35 points by halftime. If they hadn't placed their foot on the brake in the second half, who knows how many yards and points the Giants could have accumulated by game's end. Tailbacks Ahmad Bradshaw and David Wilson rushed the ball 31 times for 182 yards (5.9 per/), and a touchdown. Eli Manning ended up with 5 touchdown passes and a quarterback rating of 134.5.
So, that's it. The Eagles finish the season at 4-12. Chances are Andy Reid and Michael Vick will be looking for jobs elsewhere starting tomorrow. Who knows what's in the future for a few other players on the team? Will DeSean Jackson still be with the club next year? The oft-injured Jeremy Maclin? With the emergence of Bryce Brown, will LeSean McCoy make for good trade bait? The disappointing high-salary players in the secondary? Yeah, following a 4-12 season, there are many more questions than answers going into the off-season, including "What happened to the dream team?" If anything, this was a nightmare of a season for the Eagles team and it'll be interesting to see where they go from here.
