Let's not beat around the bush, I believe Donald Trump to be a moron of unbelievable proportions. In saying that, however, there may be an unintentional genius about him. I know, I know, that's crazy talk, but hear me out for a second.
Whatever one may want to believe, Donald Trump has no moral core. The man has changed party affiliation more often than an employee at a daycare center by the name of 101 Babies Getting Fed Nothing But Curry changes diapers. He's switched from Republican to Democrat to Independent to a party by the name of Orange Maniacal Man-Children. He's supported abortion rights, been against them; supported universal healthcare, opposed it; etc. To save us time, let's just say it's a safe bet the man's opinions have contradicted themselves on multiple occasions throughout his 70+ years. Moderate Republicans have even gone so far as to lay claim that Trump isn't representative of the GOP. Since the inception of Donald Trump's campaign, however, for as unintentional as it may have been, the man has brought to light the identity of the modern-day Republican Party, and due to that, threatens to take it down with him.
Ever since the early '60s, the Republican Party, which was once branded as the more progressive of the two parties, has gradually become more conservative, to the point where Ku Klux Klan (KKK) members and neo-Nazis see the party as representative of their values. After Democrat Lyndon Johnson signed the 1964 Civil Rights Act, racist Dixiecrats began leaving the Democratic Party for the Republican Party, and more inclusive GOPers did similarly, as they left the Republican Party for the Democratic Party. Richard Nixon then continued to change the electoral landscape by implementing what was termed the "southern strategy" as the GOP courted white voters in the southeastern portion of the country with increased frequencies. Ronald Reagan decided oligarchy was more potentially beneficial than democracy, so he spoke eloquently and backed up his eloquence with action which slowly transformed a democracy into an oligarchy via tax reform. Under George W. Bush's leadership, diplomacy, or even the thought of it, took a backseat to warfare. Ever since Dubya's two terms in the White House, starting even slightly before he entered the Oval Office, talk radio has been increasingly dominated by self-described right-wingers. Similarly, the conservatively-slanted Fox News Network has dominated in the world of cable television. Hard-core right-wing websites have garnered an increasing amount of traction. Even pastors have been called to action more regularly, as they've decided for the Sunday pulpit to be used as a device to spread a political agenda favorable to the modern-day Republican Party. What was all this a recipe for? The 45th President of the United States, Donald Trump.
Contemporary moderate Republicans like to make claim that their party is the party of Lincoln, in essence saying the party of today is no different than it was 150-some-odd years ago. I'm sorry, but that's more ridiculous than the made-up theory that polar bears once walked on venus, while wearing Oakley's sunglasses, and blaring Beach Boys' tunes on a boombox. The Republican Party of today isn't the Republican Party of 1850 or even 1950, and for as sad as it is to say, while I've continually pointed out the increasing level of extremism inside the modern-day GOP, it appears as though this wasn't seen by the public at large until Donald Trump ran for the most powerful office in the land.
Let's look at some of Donald Trump's most (in)famous quotes from the campaign trail:
- "He's (John McCain) not a war hero. He was a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren't captured."
- "When Mexico sends its people, they're not sending their best. ... They're sending people that have lots of problems, and they're bringing those problems with us. They're bringing drugs. They're bringing crime. They're rapists. And some, I assume, are good people."
- "She (Megyn Kelly) had blood coming out of her eyes, blood coming out of her wherever."
- "I have to say this, he hit on my hands. Nobody has ever hit my hands. I've never heard of this one. Look at those hands. Are they small hands? And he referred to my hands if they're small, something else must be small. I guarantee you there's no problem. I guarantee you."
- "Look at that face (Carly Fiorina's)! Would anyone vote for that? Can you imagine that, the face of our next president. I mean, she's a woman, and I'm not supposed to say bad things, but really, folks, come on. Are we serious?"
- "...You know, I'm automatically attracted to beautiful -- I just start kissing them. It's like a magnet. Just kiss. I don't even wait. And when you're a star, they let you do it. You can do anything. Grab 'em by the pussy. You can do anything."
- "When these people (Asians) walk in the room, they don't say, 'Oh, hello! How's the weather? It's so beautiful outside. Isn't it lovely? How are the Yankees doing? Oh, they're doing wonderful. Great.' They say, 'We want deal!'"
- "I know more about ISIS than the generals do, believe me."
"I watched when the World Trade Center came tumbling down. And I watched in Jersey City, N.J., where thousands and thousands of people (Muslims) were cheering as that building was coming down. Thousands of people were cheering."
- "Donald J. Trump is calling for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country's representatives can figure out what the hell is going on."
- "If you see somebody getting ready to throw a tomato, knock the crap out of 'em, would you? Seriously. OK? Just knock the hell - I promise you, I will pay for the legal fees. I promise. I promise."
- "Don't believe those phony numbers when you hear 4.9 and 5 percent unemployment. The number's probably 28, 29, as high as 35. In fact, I even heard recently 42 percent."
- "The answer is that there has to be some form of punishment (for women who get abortions)."
- "Happy #CincoDeMayo! The best taco bowls are made in Trump Tower Grill. I love Hispanics!"
- "Look at my African-American over here!"
- "I always wanted to get the Purple Heart. This was much easier (after a supporter gave him one)."
- "That's all right, leave him alone. That's all right. You know the great thing about - we have a protester. By the way, were you paid $1,500 to be a thug?"
Dismissing facts as phony. Claiming debunked conspiracy theories to be facts. Placing Muslims in a bad light, as well as Hispanics and blacks. Alleging men to be superior to women. Showcasing patriotism through symbolism as opposed to actions. Violence before diplomacy. Sound familiar? It should. This is the modern-day Republican Party in a nutshell. It's no wonder Donald Trump became the the face, the symbol of it. The GOP, with increasing frequency, has attempted to: Suppress minorities' votes, stip women's reproductive freedoms, derail LGBT progress, bastardize Muslims, blame the poor, etc. When Donald Trump said he was going to make America great again, this was a call to all those who sought white privilege over equality, and for as unintentional as it may have been, he provided a reflection of the modern-day Republican Party. Donald Trump may be the ultimate con man, but the GOP was conned a long time ago, and as sad as it is to say, it wasn't until Trump ran for and became president that the public at large began to see it. GOP no longer stands for Grand Old Party; it stands for Greedy Oligarchical Pricks.
