According to Chris Moody of Yahoo News, Faith and Freedom Coalition founder Ralph Reed recently made the following comments during the group's "Road to Majority" conference in Washington, D.C.:
"The battle looked like it was lost, but it really wasn't (the battle against slavery). And that's kind of like where we are right now. Anybody heard lately that we're losing the marriage issue? Anybody heard that argument? You notice some similarities? I'm not comparing slavery to same-sex marriage, OK? I'm just pointing out that when you have these fights, what's interesting is that if you look at same-sex marriage, it's now legal in 17 states. Only six out of those 17, six out of 50 states, had done it by referendum or by state legislature. In every other case, it was imposed by courts. Just like the courts had to impose Dred Scott. Because they couldn't do it on the country because the country didn't agree with it. The country, by the way, doesn't agree with same-sex marriage."
First off, Ralph Reed may want to learn a thing or two about comparisons. You can't compare two things, and then state, "I'm not comparing them." A person can attempt to do this, but if he or she were making such an argument in a Critical Thinking course, they'd receive an "F" both for effort and execution.

Actually, yeah you are... Being as smooth as he is, I can envision Mr. Reed uttering the following quote when a wife or girlfriend of his started gaining weight:
"Honey, do you see this picture of a cow? Now, do you see this recent picture of you? Do you notice some similarities? I'm not comparing you to a cow, OK? I'm just pointing out that... Honey? Honey? Where are you going? Dear? I'm not calling you fat. Why are you waddling out the door? Need some help? Why are you mad? Sweetie?"
Yes, he's that smooth. Speaking of smooth, Mr. Reed's math appears to be a little off as well.
"The country, by the way, doesn't agree with same-sex marriage."
Actually, that's not true. While that was true through 2010, a majority of the public has supported same-sex marriage since 2011, and just recently hit a new high.
In a late-May Gallup poll, it showed that 55% of the public now supports same-sex marriage, while only 42% disapprove of it (net +13%). According to my math, 55 > (is greater than) 42. Mr. Reed apparently disagrees with that. He'd make for an incredible math teacher.
"Good morning, class. Today we're going to focus our attention on comparing numbers, where we'll decide if one number is greater than, less than, or equal to another. We'll start with a poll I found. It showed that 97% of scientists believe in global warming and 3% do not. So, class, is 97 greater than, less than, or equal to 3? Who believes 97 is greater than 3? All of you? Well, I'm sorry to say this, but you'd all be wrong. In this case, 97 is definitely less than 3, because global warming obviously isn't real. Okay, I think that's enough for today. Class dismissed."
Anyway, Ralph Reed, tell me more about how to compare two things without actually doing so and how to read numbers...
