It boggles my mind that at one time in the distant past Abraham Lincoln was a Republican. Granted, parties, like transportation, technology, or fashion trends, change over time. Nowhere has that been more evident than with the GOP. They've gone from the party of Lincoln to the party of voter-suppression, conspiracy theories, and the top 1%. While Republicans continually complain about immigrants not speaking fluent English in this country, the most foreign language to them appears to be logic. Let's just take three recent stories as examples.
1) Refugees
The definition of a refugee is "a person who has been forced to leave their country in order to escape war, persecution, or natural disaster."
In other words, a refugee is a person in harm's path, attempting to move to a safer place. I know, that sounds terrifying, right? Donald Trump and his minions have been adamantly opposed to providing such protections for refugees. Why? What's the rationale involved in making this decision? When an abused wife/mother flees her home, in hopes of finding some help, isn't she like a refugee? Yes, according to the technical definition. So if Trump were to remain consistent on his treatment of these abused women as he has been with refugees, he'd basically say, "Shoo! Don't bother us! You're on your own! Go back to your own homes!" My guess is he wouldn't say that, however, and he, along with most other Republicans would paint the matter as an apples-and-oranges argument, but in fact, that's not true. What is true would be that the GOP would hold a double-standard to those persecuted outside of this country and those persecuted within it.
2) Climate-Change
President Trump and conservative talking heads have blasted the recent climate-change report in recent days, suggesting, "Hey, it's been colder than normal these past couple days. Where's the global warming?"
This is an incredibly stupid argument on multiple fronts, the stupidest of which is there's a stark difference between weather and climate. Just because there's a week-long cold spell in a small town doesn't mean the overall temperature across the globe hasn't increased over the past 365 days. That'd be like the following scenario:
Event: LeBron James plays two consecutive below-average games.
Democrats: "He's still the best player in the world."
Republicans: "Nope, he sucks."
You see how ridiculous that sounds? Just because LeBron James has two off-games doesn't mean he's not a great player and just because we have two colder-than-average days consecutively doesn't mean climate-change isn't a thing.
3) Abortion
The Republican Party claims they're staunch pro-lifers when it comes to abortion. There's only one problem with that claim. Well, as a matter of fact, there are three problems: 1) They're anti-comprehensive sex education; 2) They're against easier access to contraception; and 3) They're not in favor of the rights of the LGBT community. Studies have shown time after time that comprehensive sex education and easy contraception access decrease unwanted pregnancies, and with that, abortions. Not only that, but who has fewer abortions than gay couples? I rest my case...
Like I said, logic is like a foreign language to the modern-day Republican Party. Hopefully their New Year's resolution is to take and pass a college-level Critical Thinking course...
