I'm amazed by the number of "quality" letters-to-the-editor that are published in The Columbus Dispatch. Another dandy of a letter was printed in today's paper, entitled, "Supreme Court is doing work of the devil." Let me guess, this has something to do with the DOMA ruling. Here's how the letter started:
"We were appalled to watch the devil win again on Wednesday as the U.S. Supreme Court rules in favor of homosexuality ("Marriage issue will shift to states, Dispatch article, Thursday). The justices who voted for this abhorrent lifestyle showed exactly why they were put on the court."
Okay, first off, who is "we?" Is a person with multiple personalities writing this letter? Is the writer speaking of he and an invisible buddy named Yahweh? Alright, please continue...
"They were placed on the bench to continue the devil's destruction of America. The United States was founded by God-fearing people to do God's work, to help his people. The devil realized long ago that he couldn't muster enough military might anywhere else in the world to complete his evil wishes, so he long ago decided to sway enough weak minds to destroy America from within."
Who founded the United States again? Vikings? Natives? Oh, the Pilgrims... They founded this land to do God's work? What does "his" work entail and who exactly are "God's people?" Can homosexuals not be God's people because of their orientation? What if they're devout believers? The devil realized no country could ever become as powerful as the U.S.? Don't tell China that... Alright, sorry again to interrupt. You were saying?
"Look at what the homosexuals have done in churches, families, the Boy Scouts and various states. Look at 53 million murdered babies. See the more than 26,000 different groups calling themselves the one church that has the only direct path to God. Look at the pornography and violence aired for all to see."
What have homosexuals done in churches? Listen to sermons, pray, sing hymns, get baptized, take part in communion, get married? This is different from heterosexuals how? What have homosexuals done "in" families (I assume he means "to" families)? Been siblings, parents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents? How is that different from heterosexuals? What have homosexuals done to the Boy Scouts and various states? Asked for equal opportunity and treatment? How dare they! Now, where did this comment about "53 million murdered babies" come from? Are gays responsible for abortions? That would be quite the trick, considering a gay couple can't get one another pregnant.
"See the more than 26,000 different groups calling themselves the one church that has the only direct path to God."
...and what does this individual's church teach?
"Look at the pornography and violence aired for all to see."
Again how does this have to do with homosexuality? The writer spoke about homosexuality and spent the title and first two paragraphs going over the Supreme Court's DOMA decision, and then decides to wander off to a land far, far away. How is life over there? In any case, let's see how the writer closes his "piece."
"Please pray for God's guidance. Stand up to evil, wherever it rears its ugly head.
ERIC BRANT
Belpre"
I'm not a believer, but even I'll pray that God somehow how the ability to prevent people like Mr. Brant from getting any other letters-to-the-editor published in major newspapers. Amen.
