I once heard a person say, "I don't care if a person hates me; I just hope it's for the right reason(s)." Likewise, I don't care if Republicans hate President Obama; I just hope it's for the right reason(s), and this goes for the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) as well. Unfortunately, it appears most of them are still trying to find that "right" reason to despise both as a recent poll shows.
According to a recently released YouGov.com poll, just 43% of Republicans believe the Affordable Care Act has resulted in an increase in the number of people with health insurance, while 25% believe that number has remained the same, and 21% believe the ACA has actually resulted in a decrease in that very number. That's right, over 1 in 5 Republicans believe "Obamacare" has done the direct opposite of expanding healthcare coverage across the country and more believe the healthcare law has either resulted in no change or a decrease in the number of those with health insurance (44%) than believe it's increased the number of those insured (43%). Again, if a Republican truly has an issue with Obamacare, so be it, but don't let that reason be due to hatred, ignorance, and/or denial.
On March 16th of this year, CNN reported that 16.4 million people have gained healthcare coverage since Obamacare became a law (yes, 16,400,000 people). Not only that, but Gallup reported earlier this year that the uninsured rate has dropped to its lowest point since they started tracking it in 2008 (daily tracking), down from 17.1% in the fourth quarter of 2013 to 12.9% in the fourth quarter a year later.
Let's break this down a little further:
GOPers whom believe Obamacare has resulted in no change or a decrease in the number of those with health insurance: 44% (50.6% of respondents)
The actual number: +16,400,000 (+16.4 million)
Are Republicans really this devoid of reality? To criticize the healthcare law for not bringing down prices much in most cases or to criticize the website's problems at the start of the enrollment process would be one thing (or two things), but to completely deny the reality that the law has resulted in a substantial increase in those with health insurance has to simply be the result of hatred, ignorance, and/or denial.
Well, I best be going. I'm going to burn some calories while I jog for a couple of miles, which, according to at least 44% of Republicans, means I'm going to either not not burn any calories at all or will wind up adding calories through jogging. Wish me luck!
