Let's review a few significant events in the world of politics over the past few years.
1. Barack Obama was elected president in 2008.
2. He signed a healthcare reform bill which became known as Obamacare.
3. The case got taken to the Supreme Court and was ruled as Constitutional.
4. The Republican Party went after Obamacare and promised to repeal it if they won enough elections in 2012.
5. Obama was re-elected in 2012 and Democrats picked up seats in both the House and the Senate.
6. Obamacare is scheduled to be mostly implemented as of January 1st, 2014.
7. House Republicans tried repealing, defunding, and delaying Obamacare even though Democrats controlled the Senate and the president, who the bill was named after (according to the GOP), was also a Democrat.
8. After these efforts failed, the House decided to shutdown the government until they got their way.
Notice a theme with this series of events? Republicans lost.
The 2008 presidential election? Republicans lost.
The Supreme Court ruling? Republicans lost.
The 2012 elections? Republicans lost.
Efforts to repeal, defund, and delay Obamacare? Republicans lost.
Even with the simple fact that the Republican Party has lost time and time again with regard to Obamacare, they haven't gotten the clue, and have decided to go the route of being childish by shutting down the government to try and showcase that the rules don't apply to them. It reminds me of this following story I'm about to make up and share.
Setting: A boy's driveway, where he and a friend are playing basketball
Joey: "Okay. So, do we have a deal?"
Billy: "Yeah - whoever gets to 21 first gets the basketball we found in the park earlier today."
::Joey leads 20 to 16::
Joey: ::makes a shot for the win:: "Woo-hoo! That did it! I'm past 21 now! Good game, Billy."
Billy: ::grabs the ball::
Joey: "Can I have the ball, Billy? It's mine now."
Billy: "No, it's not! It's mine!"
Joey: "Come on, Billy - we had a deal!"
Billy: "Best two out of three!"
Joey: "Okay, fine..."
::Joey leads 20 to 18::
Joey: ::makes a shot for the win:: "Wow! I'm on fire today!"
Billy: ::grabs the ball::
Joey: "Let's not do this again. Come on, Billy. I beat you two times fair and square! Can I have the ball now? I think your mom's calling you for dinner."
Billy: ::walks away with it:: "No! It's mine! All mine! You can't have it!"
Joey: "So now I can't play basketball unless I get another one?"
Billy: "Too bad! I'm going to eat now. Bye, loser!"
Joey: ::sighs:: "Alright. See you tomorrow then."
Billy: "Maybe..."

And now...NOW...Republicans are telling reporters that the shutdown was never really about Obamacare, but a political weapon to be used in the debt ceiling fight, coming up later this month. http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/frame_game/2013/10/shutdown_leverage_forget_obamacare_republicans_are_using_the_shutdown_as.html
