So, it appears as if The Salt Lake Tribune has decided to place a great amount of spin on Miss Utah's flub at Sunday's Miss USA pageant - so much spin, in fact, that even Fox News has commented on the matter by saying, "Holy sh*t! That's more spin than Bill O'Reilly gives in the 'No Spin Zone!'"
Pertaining to Miss Utah's retched response to NeNe Leakes' question regarding the gender wage-gap, Scott D. Pierce of The Salt Lake Tribune titled his article, "Miss Utah USA's botched answer makes her a star - Marissa Powell didn't win, but she's the one everyone is talking about."
Yes, because any time a person becomes "the one everyone is talking about," that has to be a good thing. Just ask Bill Buckner...
The Salt Lake Tribune didn't stop the spinning at just the title of the article. It continued with the quote. Pierce quoted Miss Utah as answering Ms. Leakes' question in this fashion:
"I think we can relate this back to education and how we are continuing to try to strive to figure out how to create jobs right now. That is the biggest problem. I think especially the men are seen as the leaders of this, so we need to figure out how to create education better so we can solve this problem."
What? That's what everyone is talking about? That quote? Sure, the "create education better" line is cringe-worthy, to be certain, but I still wouldn't understand all the mocking of Miss Utah based on the before-mentioned quote, if that was indeed the quote verbatim.
Sadly, when reading other articles regarding Ms. Powell's flub and listening to it on video, it appears as if The Salt Lake Tribune worked around a few rough spots to place Miss Utah in a better light.
Here's how Miss Utah really sounded:
"I think we can re ... relate this back to education and how we are ... continuing to try to strive to ... [smiles] ... figure out how to create jobs, right now. That is the biggest problem in ... I think, especially the men, are, um ... seen as the leaders of this, and so we need to try to figure out how to ... create education better so that we can solve this problem."
Pierce of The Salt Lake Tribune will likely title his next "piece," "The Salt Lake Tribune's spinning of Miss Utah's botched answer makes it a star!"
Well, I best get going. I think I'm going to grab a loudspeaker and walk around downtown Columbus uttering stupid things, because apparently, it'll make me a star...
