Public Policy Polling just released poll results regarding conspiracy theories. For the most part, it appears as if a very small minority of people believe most such theories. However, there were some rather surprising results.
First off, 33% of Republicans still believe that Saddam Hussein was involved in the 9/11 attacks, while 41% don't believe this, and 28% aren't sure. For the record, while Hussein was never going to win Best Man of the Year honors at any point in his life, he wasn't involved in the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
A fifth (20%) of Republicans also believe that President Barack Obama is the Anti-Christ and another 17% aren't sure.
Democrats, meanwhile, strongly believe that then President George W. Bush misled this country on Iraq's alleged weapons of mass destruction, as 72% of Democrats think this, while only 14% do not, and another 15% aren't sure. The numbers are the direct opposite for Republicans - only 13% of whom believe Bush misled the country on Iraq's WMDs, 73% don't support this theory, and 13% aren't certain.
Both parties agree on one conspiracy theory - that regarding the JFK assassination. Only 23% of Democrats and 25% of Republicans believe that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone in the assassination, while 52% of Democrats and 55% of Republicans do not, and another 24% and 20% aren't sure.
Out of all the poll's results, the one I found most surprising was with regard to global warming. Overall, 51% of the participants said they didn't believe global warming to be a hoax, while 37% did, and another 12% wasn't sure. Democrats overwhelmingly believe that global warming isn't a hoax, as 77% responded as such, while only 11% responded they did in fact believe it to be a hoax, and another 12% weren't certain. A strong majority of Independents also believe global warming to not be a hoax (51%/41%, with 8% whom are uncertain). However, amongst Republicans, I found the numbers to be quite astonishing. According to this poll, only 25% of Republicans believe global warming to be real, while 58% think it's a hoax, and 16% aren't sure. Really? Only one-quarter of self-described Republicans believe global warming is real? I guess when many believe in an invisible creator, senses and science don't do a whole lot of good...
Senses and science - "The temperature has been rising for quite some time. The polar ice caps have been melting. These are facts, I guess, but still, it all sounds kind of fishy to me - like a bunch of hooey!"
Invisible man - "A man I've never seen nor met created the world in seven days? Sounds good to me! He sent his son - a perfect man - to die on the cross for all our sins, so that we may be saved and upon dying, live with him for all eternity in a paradise known as heaven? Sounds even better! He rose three days after dying? This just keeps getting better and better! He was born from a virgin? That has to be true!"
