Over the past couple days, the Mitt Romney secret video has dominated the news-cycle. In a sad attempt to divert the media's attention elsewhere, the Romney team released a video clip of Barack Obama saying this in a speech he gave in 1998 (yes - 14 years ago):
"The trick is figuring out how do we structure government systems that pool resources and hence facilitate some redistribution because I actually believe in redistribution, at least at a certain level to make sure everybody's got a shot."
Contrast this with what Mitt Romney said during his May fundraiser in Boca Raton:
"There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it. That that's an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what. And I mean the president starts off with 48, 49... he starts off with a huge number. Forty-seven percent of Americans pay no income tax. So our message of low taxes doesn't connect. So he'll be out there talking about tax cuts for the rich. I mean, that's what they sell every four years. And so my job is not to worry about those people. I'll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives. What I have to is convince the five to ten percent in the center that are independents...that are thoughtful, that look at voting one way or the other depending upon in some cases emotion, whether they like the guy or not."
In other words, while President Obama was seeming to say that all people deserve an equal chance of being successful and that he would represent every one, Governor Romney was insinuating that he doesn't represent nor care about half the country. In my opinion, this Obama video only makes matters worse for Romney, because it just feeds into the notion that the President cares people of all stripes and at least tries to relate to the average person, whereas Romney is just an uber-wealthy businessman who knows and cares nothing about the average American.
Perhaps the Romney team should try harder to divert the media's attention away from what is being dubbed "the secret video" and release some pictures the President drew while in kindergarten or a poem he wrote in 7th grade or a video clip of him crying like a little baby when he was in fact a baby.
