NFL commentators' fickleness and hyperbole

Ah, how I long for it around this time every year - sports writers and commentators showing their fickle and hyperbolic ways. The NFL is unlike any other professional sport, because unlike in baseball, basketball or hockey, where multiple games are played every week and it's difficult to make mention of them all in daily (or weekly) columns or show segments, every team plays one game per week (with the occasional bye). This gives these sports writers and commentators all week long to talk about the weekend's game(s) and speculate about what will happen in the following week and weeks after that.

We're only two weeks into the NFL season, yet I've heard the following questions or comments mentioned by such individuals:

"Are the Saints done?"/"The Saints are done!"

"Have the Patriots lost it?"/"Have teams figured out the Patriots offense?"

"Are the 49ers the best team?"/"Are the 49ers destined for the Super Bowl?"

"If the Steelers lose this game, are they done?"

"Are the Broncos a Super Bowl contender with Manning?"

So the New Orleans Saints have started 0-2, the New England Patriots only scored 18 points in their loss to the Arizona Cardinals yesterday, the San Francisco 49ers are an impressive 2-0 after defeating the Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions (playoff teams from last year), the Pittsburgh Steelers lost their first game of the season and had to face the then 1-0 New York Jets in Week 2 and the Denver Broncos beat the Steelers in their first game, what can we really make of all this? Not much of anything at the moment. Are the Saints done? No. They're 0-2, but last I heard, it's a 16-game season. Are they in a bit of a hole and unless they pick things up and rather quickly, they'll have a difficult time making the playoffs? Yes, but to say their season is over after starting 0-2 is ridiculous. The Patriots did only score 18 points in their loss to Arizona, but they also scored 34 points in their first week's game against the Tennessee Titans. Did the offense really take a permanent dive in just a single week? That's highly unlikely. Unfortunately for them, they're going to be facing an angry Baltimore Ravens defense on the road next Sunday night, so if the offense struggles again, I can only imagine what these sports writers and commentators will be saying. Were the 49ers impressive in the first couple weeks? Yes - very, however there's still a very long way to go and it'd be rather silly to declare that the team is the very best and destined for the Super Bowl. The Steelers lost their opening game, but if they fell to the Jets in Week 2, would that have been it for them? Again - no. They'd still have 14 games left in the regular season, including six within their division. As for the Denver Broncos, while off-season acquisition, Peyton Manning, and the team had a great showing in the first week against the typically tough Pittsburgh Steelers, the team has a lot to prove on a consistent basis before they can truly illustrate that come playoff time, they'll have to be reckoned with.

Every year, it's silly season in the NFL until around election day, which is ironic, considering we're experiencing silly season in the world of politics now as well.

Boycotting jukeboxes because of TouchTunes

I love music and enjoy hitting the bar(s) over the weekend, so naturally, when the mood strikes me, I've never been coy about playing some songs on the jukebox. This past Thursday, a friend of mine turned 50, so several friends of her's, including myself, all met up to celebrate the occasion. At around 9:30, a friend of mine and I both chipped in $5 to play some songs on the jukebox. Four hours and 231 skips later, we gave up on hearing the songs we had selected, and went home knowing we had just wasted $5. This wasn't the first time such a thing had happened to me (and many others), and due to that, I'll be boycotting jukeboxes. Why? The scam known as TouchTunes. You see, here's how the plot typically breaks down. A person (or group of people) downloads the TouchTunes app on his/her phone, consumes one too many adult beverages, and due to this, has less care for spending extra money to hear the songs of their choosing right NOW. That's the thing with TouchTun

The difference between "looking" and "checking out"

I may be way off with these numbers, but it's my approximation that at least 75% of individuals whom are involved in a serious relationship feel it's perfectly acceptable to "check out" members of the opposite sex they're not involved with. Meanwhile, approximately 25% either don't feel this is acceptable or aren't sure about the matter. I hadn't thought about this matter for a while, but since I've been dating a woman for about 8 months, the topic has been pondered about some. When reading or hearing others discuss this very issue, I often times hear comments similar to the following: "It's human nature to look." "There's nothing wrong with checking others out. I'm sure he/she does it too!" "It's fine to do it. Just don't tell your boyfriend/girlfriend about it or do it in front of them!" "It's natural to find people attractive." When observing the array of comments, I i

The verdict is in. To no one's surprise, Jonathan Hoenig has been found guilty of being an idiot.

Just recently, when discussing the Michael Brown shooting and whether or not race had anything to do with it, Fox News contributor Jonathan Hoenig said, "You know who talks about race? Racists." One moment while I provide Mr. Hoenig with the well deserved slow-clap. :: slow-claps for two seconds :: So, that was quite the line by Mr. Hoenig, wasn't it? "You know who talks about race? Racists." Well, wasn't he just talking about race? So, by his own words, I guess that makes him a racist. Also, if he wants to be consistent, does this mean that people whom talk about gender are sexists and people whom talk about sexual orientation are homophobes? With that line of thinking, Hoenig would engage in the following back-and-forths: Hoenig: "So, who are you voting for?" A woman: "The Democratic candidate, because he's been adamant about his support for equal rights for women." Hoenig: "You sexist feminist nazi!"
