Due to the numerous tweets I posted yesterday on the trending hashtag #TrumpSuperpowers, my Twitter account was quite abuzz (https://twitter.com/CraigRozniecki). This was especially the case with regard to the following tweet:
"Bashing gay marriage & immigrants after being married three times, twice to immigrants, all while keeping a straight face
#TrumpSuperpowers"
While I received hundreds of "likes" and "retweets" in response to this tweet, I also received a handful of negative comments, such as these:
- "yur a special level of stupid, arent u? (expletive expletive expletive)"
- "There's a huge difference between legal and illegal immigrants, or are you to stupid to know that?"
- "Did you forget to use the word 'illegal'?"
- "Hey, sh*t fer brains, it's illegal immigrants!"
- "At least this man has convictions and is trying to do something!"
I didn't bicker with them long, especially the ones who called me an idiot while misspelling the word "dumb" (apparently it's "dum"). In any case, since I'm not limited to 140 characters here, I thought I'd attempt to thoroughly respond to my tweet-critics.
It's all about facts, sarcasm, and irony. When it comes to the issue of immigration, have illegals largely faced the brunt of Donald Trump's attacks? Yes, however, legal immigrants have been on the receiving end as well, as Trump's said the following:
"...Legal immigrants do not and should not enter easily. It's a long, costly, draining, and often frustrating experience-by design."
He's contradicted himself a number of times on legal immigrants, as he does with most issues, but still, one would be remiss to say he's only gone after illegal immigrants. The man is also so vague at times it's difficult to know whether he's talking about legal immigrants, illegals, or a combination of the two. Heck, the man appears to confuse the two at times, as he showcased with this tweet:
"Jeb Bush has to like the Mexican illegals because of his wife."
So, so much for the he-only-talks-about-illegals argument.
As for the irony and sarcasm, the whole legal-vs.-illegal argument is moot. As CNN's Chris Frates writes, "It's more than a little ironic that a guy as hardline on immigration as Donald Trump has been surrounded by immigrants his entire life, starting from the very beginning."
Trump's mom was born in Scotland. His current wife was born in Slovenia and became a United States citizen a year after they were wed. The Donald's first wife was born in Czechoslovakia. The two of them were married in 1977 and she didn't become a U.S. citizen for another 11 years. Let's not even go into detail about illegal immigrants who have worked for Trump...
So I don't care what one's stance is on illegal immigration or immigration in general, it's more than a little ironic, and with that humorous, that Donald Trump, who is the son of one immigrant, has married two others, and has been the boss of who knows how many more, is so steadfast against immigration, illegals in particular (but also in limiting opportunities for legals). It's also ironically humorous the man comes across as increasingly conservative on the gay marriage issue, as he's declared he supports "traditional marriage"/the sanctity of marriage, considering the fact he's been "traditionally married" three times. Yes, based on his life and experiences, Donald Trump is the last person in the world who should be bashing gay marriage and immigration. So Twitter/tweet-critics, I guess the joke's on you...
