Racism is dead? Not so fast, says the Miss America Pageant!

Last night, Nina Davuluri was crowned the winner of the 2014 Miss America Pageant. She's an Indian-American woman who was born in Syracuse, New York, and is believed to practice Hinduism. What did some lovely commentators have to say about this via Twitter? Oh, just the following:

- "9/11 was 4 days ago and she gets miss America?" - Luke Brasili

What does an Indian-American woman winning a Miss America Pageant have to do with the 9/11 terrorist attacks? Anything? Anything? Bueller?

- "I am literarily soo mad right now a ARAB won #MissAmerica" - Dallas Robinson

I'm "literally" so mad that Mr. Robinson can't correctly spell the before-mentioned word.

- "How the f**k does a foreigner win miss America? She is a Arab! #idiots" - John Amick

I'm quite happy Mr. Amick included the hashtag of idiots, because that's exactly what he is. True or false, Mr. Amick - is the state of New York a state in the United States? I'm going to ask you again, and I'm kind of giving you the answer - is the state of New York a state in the United States? If you correctly answered that question in the affirmative, you should then know that Ms. Davuluri isn't a foreigner, but an American - by birth no less.

- "And the Arab wins Miss America. Classic." - POOKIE

Okay, pookie, what does "Arab" mean to you? After you answer the question incorrectly, I'll direct you toward a dictionary, a world map, and a compass, in case you get lost when attempting to read the world map.

- "Miss America? You mean Miss 7-11." - CHEEZ-IT

Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha! How long did it take for you to come up with that one? How many boxes of Cheez-Its did it take for that light bulb in your head to turn on for a change? I'm going to guess four.

- "Sand n**er is up #missamerica" - Chris Black

As is ignorance in the world of one Christopher Black. Congratulations.

- "If a Muslim wins this pageant. Lord help me." - Emily

So what if she were a Muslim? Does freedom of religion only apply to Christians in this country? What is "freedom" if only applied to certain groups of people? In any case, which one of the following three words does not belong? Hindu, Hinduism, Muslim. Ms. Davuluri is a practicing Hindu. Does that mean she likely studies Hinduism or Islam? I know, that's a tricky one. Just let me know when you get around to it. Thanks.

- "This is Miss America... Not Miss Foreign Country." - Meredith Talley

So, when 9/11 occurred, the United States wasn't the country being attacked? You see, Ms. Davuluri is from New York. Is New York a foreign country? If so, this is news to me. I may have to google it after finishing this blog to see if Lady Liberty has been renamed Lady Lebanon.

- "Shes like not even american and she won miss america" - Kat

Being born in America doesn't make a person American? I was born in America. Am I secretly a native of Poland, Germany, England, or Zimbabwe?

- "How can you be Miss America if you don't even know what state you're from?!?!" - Tara Leonard

She was born in Syracuse, New York. Why don't you ask the question you really want to ask, which is, "How can you be Miss America if you're not white?"

- "Well they just picked a Muslim for Miss America. That must've made Obama happy. Maybe he had a vote." - Elizabeth

Yeah, with all the problems over in the Middle East and right here at home, especially in this nation's capital, I'm sure all of the president's problems magically vanished once a non-white woman was named Miss America. I'm also starting to think anyone between the complexions of white and black are seen as Muslim by some. Muslims study Islam. Islam is different than Hinduism, which is what Ms. Davuluri practices. Therefore, she isn't a Muslim.

- "How can a muslim win Miss AMERICA? #sorrynotsorry" - Max Orr

First off, she's not a Muslim. Secondly, why does it matter? We are free to practice the religion of our choosing in this country. Whether one practices Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Atheism, Paganism, etc., that's their right, and just because someone practices a religion which differs from the majority in this country, doesn't mean he or she should be seen as any less American than the majority. This poster says he's sorry, but not sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry Nina Davuluri, an American by birth, has to be the subject of such ignorance and racism in light of such a celebratory moment. I applaud her for rising above the negativity and wish her nothing but the best on her journey forward.

Boycotting jukeboxes because of TouchTunes

I love music and enjoy hitting the bar(s) over the weekend, so naturally, when the mood strikes me, I've never been coy about playing some songs on the jukebox. This past Thursday, a friend of mine turned 50, so several friends of her's, including myself, all met up to celebrate the occasion. At around 9:30, a friend of mine and I both chipped in $5 to play some songs on the jukebox. Four hours and 231 skips later, we gave up on hearing the songs we had selected, and went home knowing we had just wasted $5. This wasn't the first time such a thing had happened to me (and many others), and due to that, I'll be boycotting jukeboxes. Why? The scam known as TouchTunes. You see, here's how the plot typically breaks down. A person (or group of people) downloads the TouchTunes app on his/her phone, consumes one too many adult beverages, and due to this, has less care for spending extra money to hear the songs of their choosing right NOW. That's the thing with TouchTun...

The difference between "looking" and "checking out"

I may be way off with these numbers, but it's my approximation that at least 75% of individuals whom are involved in a serious relationship feel it's perfectly acceptable to "check out" members of the opposite sex they're not involved with. Meanwhile, approximately 25% either don't feel this is acceptable or aren't sure about the matter. I hadn't thought about this matter for a while, but since I've been dating a woman for about 8 months, the topic has been pondered about some. When reading or hearing others discuss this very issue, I often times hear comments similar to the following: "It's human nature to look." "There's nothing wrong with checking others out. I'm sure he/she does it too!" "It's fine to do it. Just don't tell your boyfriend/girlfriend about it or do it in front of them!" "It's natural to find people attractive." When observing the array of comments, I i...
