Every now and again, I bump into someone (usually a guy) who at least partially blames rape victims for the crime. I can just imagine the look on my face as I'm hearing the partial defense of rapists - one which religious mothers may give after they've lost their voice and caught their son masturbating - confused, silent, shocked, and disgusted.
Of course, when hearing such opinions, it always starts like this:
"Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that rape is right or anything, but come on... I mean..."
...and then comes the alleged rationale of the rapists and the critique of the victims.
"When a woman wears something like that and shows that much skin, she's just seeking attention and what's a guy to think?"
Sure, she may want to get looked at, but seeking attention as far as admiring eyes goes is far different than forced sexual intercourse.
"She got wasted. She put herself in that position."
I don't care how drunk someone gets, they don't deserve to be touched in any manner without their consent.
"She was flirting with the guy and leading him on all night. What was he supposed to think?"
If any kind of flirting between two people always led to sex, there wouldn't be enough space on this planet for all the people we would have brought into this world.
The rape defender then concludes his tangent by saying something like this:
"It's really sad when it happens and I feel really bad for them, but a lot of these times, and I hate to say this, I think the women are just as much to blame as the guys. It's not the guys' fault the woman put herself in those positions."
It truly sickens and saddens me to hear people blame the victims of a horrendous crime such as rape. No matter what a woman was wearing, how much she had to drink, or how much she flirted, that's no reason for any guy to force himself on her and violate her in every way imaginable - traumatizing her for the rest of her days. There can be no excuse for such a despicable act and I really wish everyone could see that.
