While the 2016 presidential election is a long ways away, I'm flummoxed by some recent polling pertaining to it. In a recent Public Policy Polling (PPP) poll, it showed that 21% of Republicans view Texas Senator Ted Cruz as the party's leader - more than anyone else. New Jersey Governor Chris Christie placed second at 17%, with House Majority Leader John Boehner finishing a close third at 15%.
While the GOP may not see things as such, this recent trend with polls showing Cruz as conservatives' preference to become the party's nominee in the 2016 election could be troublesome for the party. While the far-right appears to love Senator Cruz, his approval numbers are extremely low amongst everyone else, including independents. While the far-right would definitely vote for Cruz if he became the party's nominee, he'd have extreme difficulty in winning over independents, moderates, and Reagan Democrats.
The Republican Party is in a lot of trouble right now. While their candidates and ideals have moved further and further to the right, the country is moving further and further to the left. If the GOP continues this trend and nominates a Ted Cruz-like individual to represent the party in the next presidential election, their level of power will continue to shrink. There's a Civil War within the GOP between Tea Partiers and "traditional" Republicans. If the traditional Republicans garner back control, the party could still be a force in the coming years. However, if they are drowned out by a growing number of Tea Partiers in Congress, the party may want to alter its logo from an elephant to a Dodo bird, because like the Dodo bird, the party may go extinct before too terribly long.
