When reading some music reviews on Amazon, I seriously wonder at times if many reluctant people are in need of hearing aids.
Just a couple of days ago, I read this review:
Muse - The 2nd Law
Reviewer: D. Nelsen (Arkansas)
Score: 2.0 out of 5.0 stars
Title: "Boring..."
Review: "I thought that I'd really like this album but their songs all sort of merge together and sound the same. I like 'Black Holes...' and 'Origin of Symmetry' a lot. This not so much. Took it off my iPhone."
It's one thing to dislike this album and quite another to dislike it because "their songs all sort of merge together and sound the same." If there's one consistent complaint about this album, both from fans and critics of the band, it's that the songs sound so different, it prevents a good flow to the album. While I'm a huge fan of the band, it took me a couple of listens to get used to the wild variations of sounds throughout the course of the album. Here's a brief rundown of the album:
1. "Supremacy" - Sounds like a hybrid of a theme song from a James Bond film and Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir."
2. "Madness" - A poppier song for the first 3/4 of it, before a dramatic conclusion.
3. "Panic Station" - "Another One Bites the Dust" + Prince + Michael Jackson + disco = this song
4/5. "Survival" - A slow-building stadium-rocker, preceded by a piano bit by the lead singer
6. "Follow Me" - Dub-step + Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive" + an '80s rock feel = this song
7. "Animals" - A slower, almost Eric Clapton-esque-type tune, with great guitar parts toward the middle and end portions of the song.
8. "Explorers" - The slowest song Matt Bellamy sings, almost sounds Christmasy toward the end.
9. "Big Freeze" - This song is a merging of Muse and U2.
10. "Save Me" - A slow, almost '70s-like song sung by bassist Chris Wolstenholme.
11. "Liquid State" - A hard-rocking '80s heavy metal song, also sung by the bass player.
12. "The 2nd Law: Unsustainable" - An instrumental, which sounds almost like the theme song from a video game. This is the song where dub-step is at its most prominent.
13. "The 2nd Law: Isolated System" - Another instrumental, a bit slower than the preceding song, but concluding with more of a sound of hope, as opposed to the sound of doom used in the preceding track.
Like I said, it's one thing to dislike this album, but to foolishly claim that all of the album's songs sound the same would be like me saying Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir" sounds identical to Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive."
