Mitch McConnell talks one way and votes another on women's issues

Kentucky senator and man who believes turtles are a man's best friend - Mitch McConnell - released a document on Friday which touted his support for VAWA (Violence Against Women Act). In the document, a voter is quoted to have said: "Mitch was the co-sponsor of the original Violence Against Women Act - and continues to advocate for stronger policies to protect women. I am proud to call him my senator." There's just one small problem with that. While McConnell did sponsor VAWA in 1991, he didn't support it in '93, and voted against it in '94, 2012, and 2013. One out of five isn't bad, though - right, ladies? McConnell also voted against the Lilly Ledbetter Act and Paycheck Fairness Act, because McConnell said they'd "make the workplace more difficult for women." John Cornyn - the man who takes a stand, votes the other way, before taking another stand!

Republican Texas Senator John Cornyn recently released a press release hailing the SAFER Act (he referred to it as the "Cornyn Bill") for its pursuance of eliminating nationwide rape kit backlogs. This was integrated into the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) renewal, which Cornyn himself said would, "provide funding for state and local governments to conduct audits of untested DNA evidence and create a national reporting system to help track and prioritize untested rape kits." So, what's the catch? John Cornyn was one of 22 male Republican Senators to vote against the VAWA renewal. That's always the ideal strategy - to give oneself credit for something he or she opposed, and then to praise that which he or she opposed, but for which he or she took credit. This could make earning the women's vote a little tricky for Mr. Cornyn in his next election. I could see an ad of his saying the following: "If you're looking for a guy to speak in favo...
