Just yesterday, I wrote about United Methodist Church Reverend Frank Schaefer facing punishment for officiating at his son's gay wedding. Today, he found out what the punishment was going to be - a 30-day suspension and if he doesn't renounce his support for marriage equality at the end of the suspension, he will be defrocked. After hearing about his punishment, Schaefer said this: "[The Church] needs to stop judging people based on their sexual orientation. We have to stop the hate speech. We have to stop treating them as second-class Christians. [...] I will never be silent again, This is what I have to do. [...] I have to minister to those who hurt and that's what I'm doing." Schaefer even added that if any same-sex couple wants him to marry them over the next 30 days, he would do it. Former Green Bay Packers safety LeRoy Butler was scheduled to give an anti-bullying presentation at a church in Wisconsin this summer, but it appears as if his speech has been canceled, which Butler explained in a series of tweets. These tweets stated the following: "Wow, I was schedule to speak at a church in WI, and a member said that the pastor wants to cancel my event, I said ok why? Then I was told, because I said congrats to Jason Collins on twitter, I said really? we have a contract, he said check the moral cause. Even though approximately 90% of the public support universal background checks, including a large majority of gun owners, many Congressional Republicans are not convinced on the matter. The latest in this seemingly never-ending line of anti-background check Republicans is Utah Senator Mike Lee, who recently said the following on Fox News: "[T]he concern with those is that background checks in and of themselves aren't going to work unless they are accompanied by some sort of registration system. A church facing a lawsuit from former members whom have accused church officials of covering up sex abuse allegations is thinking about using the First Amendment as its defense. Sovereign Grace Ministries saw a former member indicted this past December on charges that he molested multiple boys in the 1980s, and is now dealing with the very real possibility that multiple members covered up these alleged acts. Seeming to hint that the church was going to lean on the First Amendment as the members' defense, University of Virginia law professor Douglas Laycock commented on the matter with the following: "To the extent that there's a First Amendment issue they're talking about, it is not about sexual abuse as a First Amendment right. Let's be honest - Jesus loved guns. For in the book of NotActually, chapter 6, verses 66-68, Jesus said: "Only pussies turn the other cheek. I say shoot those no good motherf***ers down, yo. Amen." I only say this because this past Monday, the Arkansas state Senate passed a bill which will allow people to carry concealed guns in churches. The bill is called the Church Protection Act of 2013 (SB-71) and passed by a very convincing 28-4 margin. So, I just read that according to the pastor of the Cowboy Church of Virginia - Raymond Bell - stroking horses can "cure" people of their homosexuality.  Yes, this is why while riding on and stroking their horses in "Brokeback Mountain," Jake Gy llenhaal and Heath Ledger constantly gave each other the classic "why-can't-I-quit-you" look. It's rumored that Mr. Bell also believes the following: That walking dogs can cure one of cancer, that swimming with dolphins can rid one of herpes, and that doing a duet with a T-Rex can bring about world peace. It's always flummoxed me why so many "Christians" opt to vote for Republican candidates over any other, Democratic ones in particular. Many religious leaders have seemingly brainwashed these individuals into thinking that if they vote for a candidate who is either pro-choice or pro-gay marriage (or both), they'll be voting against God's wishes. Those have been the two issues that these religious leaders have centered their political messages around. Forget war, education, the environment, the economy, etc. It's all about abortion and gay rights. This is the reason why many die-hard Christians won't vote for Democrats. On the other side of things, since Republican politicians have generally been more outspoken about their alleged Christian faith, this has also made the Republican candidates more attractive to them than the Democratic ones. It seems that with each and every passing election, the Republicans being elected to Congress are becoming more and more conservative. One is about as likely to get drunk from drinking water as they are to find a moderate Republican either in or running for Congress. Why is it that some bloggers feel the need to preach? I don't mean that they start writing scriptures and giving blogified sermons. No, I mean that they preach and lecture about different topics. Many times, the blogs are directed towards a "you." So, when I read it, I'm thinking, "Me? What? What did I do?" There are obscenities thrown around, insults and the lecture usually consists of how a person or persons needs to go about something, how they can't go about something, what they have to do in order to better a situation, what they can't do, etc. I don't enjoy preaching blogs that make me feel like I'm at the back pew of a church and the pastor is looking right at me as he raises his voice. It's not a very comforting feeling. It doesn't give me a fuzzy feeling inside if I open a book and it says, "You need to stop being so stupid and break up with that girl! She's an idiot! She doesn't deserve you! I hate her! Ah...
