The sports media cracks me up sometimes (not literally, thank goodness). Often times it seems that many members of the sports media are about as fickle as politicians during election season when it comes to how coaches and players interact with them. When players and coaches read directly from the book, entitled, "Sports Cliches 101," media personalities seem to yawn and not talk about these seemingly over-rehearsed comments. Then when some sports personalities, like San Antonio Spurs coach Greg Popovich gets rather blunt with his responses, many in the media will almost say in unison, "It's nice to finally talk to someone who just tells it like it is." However, there are still other tell-it-like-it-is comments which seem to receive a great deal of backlash, where these same media talking heads simultaneously utter, "Whoa! He did not just say that! While we mustn't take Ebola lightly, it really amazes me how news channels have blown the situation completely out of proportion and how many people have started panicking as a result. Unless a person is traveling from West Africa or has had direct contact with a person whom is suffering from the condition, there's nothing to worry about. As Ohio Department of Health (ODH) state epidemiologist Dr. Mary DiOrio recently stated, "Only individuals who travel to or from West Africa, where the Ebola outbreak is occurring, or individuals in close contact with someone ill with Ebola [need to worry about getting sick]." President Obama recently received some criticism for a remark he made regarding California Attorney General Kamala Harris, especially from some far-left women supporters of his. The one line these offended individuals pointed to is when the president said the following in reference to Ms. Harris - "She also happens to be by far the best-looking attorney general in the country..." Some claimed that was a sexist comment. I happen to disagree. The word "sexism" is defined as: 1. "attitudes or behavior based on traditional stereotypes of sexual roles." 2. "discrimination or devaluation based on a person's sex, as in restricted job opportunities; especially such discrimination directed against women." How was the president discriminating or devaluing this woman who happens to be the attorney general of California? He was simply complimenting her. As reported by ESPN today, New York Jets' starting quarterback, Mark Sanchez, was supposedly surprised by the team acquiring then Denver Broncos' starting quarterback, Tim Tebow. When reading the report, Sanchez didn't even sound angry - just surprised, asking, "Wow, how did this happen?" Now I'll be the first to admit that New York Jets' head coach, Rex Ryan, is none too coy about prompting drama, however I think, as is often times the case, the media is blowing this story way out of proportion. Really - what did ESPN expect Sanchez to say when he discovered the team acquired one of the most popular players in the NFL and a starting quarterback no less? How did they think he'd react? Was Sanchez expected to say, "Oh boy! We just got Tim Tebow! ESPN is obsessed with this guy!
