John Daniel Davidson, writer at the far-right website The Federalist , just released an article entitled, "Sorry, College Kids, There's No Such Thing As Hate Speech," and I felt the need to rebut. In the article, while Davidson made some fair points, especially with regard to the seeming irony of violence at hate-speech rallies, he lost me with his claim that there's no such thing as hate speech, yet he feels liberals define hate speech as any opinion which runs contrary to theirs. Here's what he had to say specifically on the matter: "By hate speech, they (liberals) mean ideas and opinions that run afoul of progressive pieties. Do you believe abortion is is the taking of human life? That's hate speech. Think transgenderism is a form of mental illness? Hate speech. Concerned about illegal immigration? I'm frankly getting tired of writing about "religious freedom" laws and arguments, yet it seems that at least once a day, I read a new headline and story regarding the matter. The latest such case involves Linda Summers, a former deputy clerk at the county clerk's office in Harrison County, Indiana, who was fired from her job for refusing to issue a marriage license to a same-sex couple due to her religious beliefs. In light of this, Summers has decided to fight back against her employer's decision and take the matter to court, as she's filed a lawsuit, contending that employers whom force employees to issue same-sex couples marriage licenses are the bigoted ones in this scenario. After Arizona Governor Jan Brewer (Republican) vetoed SB 1062, which would have made it legal for professionals in the state to refuse service or employment to homosexuals on religious grounds, she's been on the receiving end of some lovely tweets from fellow conservatives, such as the following: "CNN led full court media press to take away rights of Christians. Republican Idaho Representative Lynn Luker, with the support of his conservative Christian allies, is attempting to make it illegal for licensed professionals to lose their license for refusing to serve or employ anyone whom they feel violates their religious beliefs. Such professionals would include all of the following: Doctors, nurses, pharmacists, police officers, firefighters, real estate agents, insurance providers, attorneys, and social workers. Representative Luker and his "Christian" allies mainly want this proposal to be passed due to the ever-increasing rights of the LGBT community. Dylan Grall - a 23-year old man from Janesville, Wisconsin - was recently arrested for battery, with a hate-crime enhancer, because he reportedly yelled at two Hebrew-speaking men to speak English, and struck both of them, before later telling police he thought they were speaking Spanish. Not only does it appear that Mr. Grall is a racist, but it also seems like his prime source for reading material are coloring and pop-up books. Here now is a list of crimes Grall will likely commit in the future: - Assault a Latino-American, later saying, "I thought he was an Asian person guy!" - Shoot a Buddhist, saying, "I thought he was a Museum - you know, an evil A-rab!" - Sexually harass a woman, saying, "I thought she was a dude!" Yeah, that's right. I love what the pastor said when approached about this. Reverend William Collier said that he wasn't a racist, but that "the white race is God's chosen people."
