...and the Oscar winner for best BET quote goes to...Donald Trump!

For the second consecutive year, there's been a lot of talk about the lack of minority nominees at the Oscars. On a recent episode of Fox & Friends , Clueless  actress and Fox News contributor, Stacey Dash, had this to say about the controversy and calls for boycott: "I think it's ludicrous, because we have to make up our minds. Either we want to have segregation or integration. If we don't want segregation, then we need to get rid of channels like BET and the BET Awards and the Image Awards, where you're only awarded if you're black. If it were the otherw ay around, we would be up in arms. It's a double standard." Donald Trump later appeared on the show and had this to say about the matter: "I saw somebody on your show today say, 'Well, what do we do with BET? The whites don't get any nominations, and I thought it was an amazing interview, actually I've never even thought of it from that standpoint. I mean, I've watched ...

Strange Muse concert review (Schottenstein Center in Columbus, OH - 3/5/13)

I often times don't understand concert reviews. I prefer to read film reviews, because most of the time, a general layout will be provided, so I can decide whether or not I should pay money to see the film. I'll then look at the critics' overall grade to perhaps place the final push on whether I should see the film in the theater, wait until it arrives on video, or bypass it all together. Most of the time, though, film reviews are productive to an extent, because they give the reader at least a decent outline of the film, so they can decide on their own whether or not to see it. With concert reviews, it's often times a different story. Music seems to be more polarizing than film. I've heard of fights erupting when people argue who's better - the Beatles or the Rolling Stones. If a certain artist's name gets mentioned, one person may moan before fainting, while another will see steam emanate from their scalp and they'll scream with more fury than I imagin...

I give up trying to predict the 2012 Republican nominee

Let's go over the history of the Republican Primary: 1) Michelle Bachmann is seen as an early favorite. 2) Rick Perry then leads in the polls 3) Herman Cain comes out of nowhere to lead the Republican field 4) Newt Gingrich rises to the top 5) Rick Santorum feels a sudden surge 6) Mitt Romney appears to finally have a firm grasp of first place after being #2 for so long Then... 1) Mitt Romney wins Iowa, but it's later reversed and Rick Santorum wins the state 2) Mitt Romney dominates in New Hampshire 3) Newt Gingrich wins convincingly in South Carolina 4) Mitt Romney wins Florida rather easily 5) Mitt Romney wins Nevada quite easily 6) Rick Santorum comes out of nowhere to win Colorado, Minnesota and Missouri So, to their credit, Rick Santorum has won four states (Iowa, Colorado, Minnesota and Missouri), Mitt Romney has won two states (New Hampshire and Florida) and Newt Gingrich has won one state (South Carolina). Romney was the favorite until South Carolin...

"Ignored Is My Love" (a poem I wrote recently)

Ignored Is My Love Opening up to you, Placing my heart in your grasp, Firmly implanted, Confident of your care and love, My feelings bottled up for so long, A weight is finally released, Slowly floating to the clouds, Feeling light again, Happiness comes upon me, Anxious to hear your response, With a bounce in my step, A sparkle in my eyes, Not having felt this way in so long, Being fearful of love, I long for your acceptance, Long for your love, Not a word is uttered, Not a sound is made, Unaware of my heart’s standing, As you quickly walk away, A sadness dawns upon me, Confusion runs rampant, Not knowing what to think, At the sound of silence, Ignored are my thoughts, Ignored are my feelings, Ignored is my heart, Ignored is my being, Ignored from your life, Pushed far away, Whether out of fear or being “nice,” I’m ignored all the same.

"The Neverending Nightmare" (a poem I wrote recently)

The Neverending Nightmare Trusting of your words, Believing in the ultimate good of people, Forgiving of your lies, Since you admitted them to me, Perfect timing, Like a romance novel, Desperate for affection, Desperate for love, To deny the inevitable, I seek a companion, To set at ease my fears, As nearing is the operation, Trusting of your eyes, As they stare deeply into mine, Illustrating certitude with your claims, Never suspecting them to be lies, Pulled up beside me, Flashing lights all around, Ignorant of the situation, Ignorant that something’s wrong, Taken away are you, Taken away am I, You back to your home, Me anywhere but, Slowly unraveling the truth, Constant questions approach me, Discovering your words to be lies, Not being who you claimed to be, Locked into a dungeon, Secluded and speechless, Awaiting the nightmare to conclude, But soon realizing it’s no dream, Trusting of your love, I shall never trust again, The nightmare l...

The Girl Without a Clue

My folks and I met up at a restaurant a while back. Whew. To say that our waitress wasn't with it and seemed to fit in with the stereotypical cheerleader would be quite the understatement. She came up to our table and asked if we had ever been there before. My dad said, "Yeah, 73 times." She looked confused and said, "No, really? 73 times?" My mom then butted in and said, "No, you can't take anything he says seriously." The gal (her name was/is Ruth) said, "Oh really? Okay," with a serious look on her face. Alright, since the menus were different than how we remembered them, she went through the menu and noted on the buffalo wings, that they had barbecue, mild and spicy, but no teriyaki yet, which she thought was lame. She asked if we wanted anything as a starter. My dad responded with, "Yeah, we'll get the teriyaki buffalo wings." I watched her as he was saying that and she looked right at her pad of paper, wrot...

Seizures

I heard the unfortunate news that a friend of mine had a seizure the other day. It's also unfortunate that I've had my share of seizures in my day. The first one I remember was back when I was 6-years old. I guess I had them before that, but I can't remember any of those. It was bizarre talking to my friend after she had her seizure, because no one truly understands what you're talking about if they've never had a seizure before. It's not like stubbing a toe, getting a cold or being rejected by someone or something. We've all gone through those instances and know what they feel like. If I stub my toe in front of someone, they notice it and say, "Gosh, I hate it when that happens," then, they're probably being honest. They probably do know what it feels like, so they can relate. But, seizures are a different ball game altogether. It's so difficult to describe seizures, even to doctors. The descriptions and details are so vague, that some...
