The Catholic Covington Confrontation

At an anti-abortion March for Life event in Washington, D.C. over the weekend, students from Catholic Covington High School (Kentucky) got into a heated confrontation with four members of a group known as the Black Hebrew Israelites and a small number of Native Americans whom were participants in an Indigenous Peoples March. Trying not to play sides (yet), here is what I can gather about what transpired. - Members of the Black Hebrew Israelites and Catholic Covington students hurling insults at one another. I hear differing stories on who started the back-and-forth. - Indigenous Peoples March participants, led by Vietnam veteran Nathan Phillips, attempted to intervene, coming between the two groups, hoping to defuse the situation. - Nathan Phillips began playing the drums and singing a song. Black Hebrew Israelites and Catholic Covington students uttered insults toward the Native Americans, while one Native told the March for Life supporters to "go back to Europe." So...

Anti-abortion group Created Equal omits women from the equation

When I drove by Dublin Scioto High School in Dublin, Ohio the other day, I was surprised to see four teenage boys holding up anti-abortion signs just outside the school premises. These signs mainly contained pictures of fetuses which had allegedly been aborted. They also noted the group behind the protest was Created Equal. When I returned home, I decided to do some research on the seemingly anti-abortion group. Well, come to find out, there's nothing "seemingly" anti-abortion about Created Equal. They are anti-abortion through and through. Most of their members appear to be white, male, and you know the rest. The portion of the site which garnered my closest attention was its FAQ section. Given that, I thought I'd fact-check some of the group's claims. 1) Question: "No one really knows when life begins, so how can you say abortion is wrong?" Created Equal's response: "The assertion that 'no one knows when life begins' disregards mod...

A funny tale brought to you by irony (...and surprisingly, not The Onion)

Please allow me to introduce everyone to Jonathan Saenz. Not only is Mr. Saenz an uber-conservative Catholic attorney, but he is also the president of a group by the name of Texas Values - an anti-abortion and anti-LGBT group which is dedicated to "preserving and advancing a culture of family values in the state of Texas." In August of 2011, Mr. Saenz's now ex-wife - Corrine Morris Rodriguez Saenz - decided to divorce Jonathan after being married to him for almost 10 years. Why did she decide this was the best move? Oh, it just so happens that Ms. Rodriguez-Saenz left her anti-LGBT husband for a woman by the name of Ercimin Paredes. Yes, Jonathan Saenz, a man who has supported the concept of gay conversion therapy, has said that legalizing gay marriage could lead the way to legalizing incest and polygamy, and is president of the anti-LGBT group Texas Values, was left by his ex-wife for a woman. Approximately 94.32% of the time, I feel the need to insert wisecracks w...

Rick Santorum - the anti-abortion movement is one of "love"

Apparently, I've had Rick Santorum and the far-right pro-life movement wrong all along. As Texas legislators are inching closer to passing some of the most extreme anti-abortion laws in the country, former Republican presidential candidate and the anti-sex virgin with seven kids - Rick Santorum - said the following: "This is an important moment for everyone to recognize where the abortion debate really is in America. The face of the pro-life movement [is] people out there every day embracing women, whether they decide to have an abortion or not. They love them. ... It is the movement of love. That's what this movement is about." Don't you see, ladies? Rick and those like him aren't out there trying to strip you of your rights out of disrespect or hate. They're simply doing it out of love. Situation: Republicans vote against a bill which would provide women with equal pay Santorum's response: "We did this for women's health and well-b...
