It's getting increasingly disturbing how ignorant so many are about both geography and Ebola. I noted yesterday that there have been at least a handful of documented cases where a student, principal, school bus driver, or guests at a school have either been sent home or have prompted parents to keep their children home due to fear of a person from Africa or traveling from Africa potentially spreading Ebola to their kids. The crazy thing about every one of these cases is the fact these individuals, whom were from or traveled from Africa, were between 1,000 and 3,000 miles away from the Ebola outbreak. That brings me to an even more recent such case, where Liberian-American mother and TV presenter, Shoana Solomon, released a viral video telling a sad tale about her 9-year-old daughter, whom was told at school that she has a disease because she's Liberian. What is it with the poor, bad, or "redneck" parts of a state being nicknamed after Kentucky? It seems to be a national trend. Regardless of where in the country a person is, chances are he or she will hear a resident of the area utter something negative about a place they refer to as "-tucky." When I lived in Omaha, Nebraska, about 20 minutes east of where I lived was Council Bluffs, Iowa. What did most Omaha residents refer to Council Bluffs as? Counciltucky, of course. So, in light of this, I thought I'd have some fun with the word "Kentucky" and nickname certain parts of every state after it. Here we go... 1. Alabama: Kentuckabama 2. Alaska: Kentuska 3. The Pew Research Center just released a poll which provided some rather disturbing results. When asked whether poor people have hard lives or have it easy, 47% of the respondents answered with the former, and 44% answered with the latter. If you thought that was disturbing, that's nothing compared to how conservatives responded to the question. Among "young outsiders," while just 10% believe that the poor have rough lives, 81% believe they have it easy (net -71%). Among "business conservatives," these numbers are 9% and 77% (net -68%), respectively. Lastly, among "steadfast conservatives," only 7% believe the poor have hard lives, and 86% believe they have it easy (net -79%). Not knowing if you and the kids will be eating tonight. Sergio Garcia won't be inviting Tiger Woods over to his place anytime soon, well, unless he's serving fried chicken, as Garcia stated. When asked by Steve Sands of The Golf Channel if he would be inviting Woods over for dinner during the upcoming U.S. Open, Garcia said, "We will have him round every night. We will serve fried chicken." Garcia then recently "apologized" by saying this: "I apologize for any offense that may have been caused by my comment on stage during the European Tour Players' Awards dinner. I answered a question that was clearly made towards me as a joke with a silly remark, but in no way was the comment meant in a racist manner."
