Rumor has it that Michigan head football coach Brady Hoke and Detroit Lions coach Jim Schwartz were out partying all weekend. That may be the only possible excuse they could give for the pair of bonehead decisions they made toward the tail-end of their games this past weekend. Down 9-6 to Northwestern late in the 4th quarter on Saturday, Brady Hoke decided to go for it on a 4th-and-2 inside the Northwestern 10-yard line. Quarterback Devon Gardner ran to the outside, only to be stopped short of a first down - handing the ball back over to the Wildcats. Luckily for Hoke, Michigan was able to pull off a miracle field goal with no time remaining to send the game to overtime, only to win 27-19 in triple overtime. I'm curious what Hoke was thinking. His offense has struggled immensely this season, especially of late. The game had not featured a single touchdown to that point in the game. I often times hear people resort to the Bible when it comes to making decisions, especially moral ones. I've also heard many such individuals claim that without religion, we'd experience moral chaos. I guess my question is why do so many people seem to depend on an ancient book for moral guidance? Why can't we think about things for ourselves and actually decide based on what we personally feel is right? I've heard and read numerous comments from Republicans that President Obama has done nothing but whine and blame his predecessor - George W. Bush - for everything. In conjunction with that, Dubya didn't appear at the Republican National Convention. It's as if Republicans want to pretend that those 8 years he was in office never happened. Believe me - I want to pretend that George W. Bush was never president either; however - he was. We can't just overlook the 8 years he was in the Oval Office and suggest that his decisions between 2001-2009 hasn't had any effect on us between the years of 2009-2012. When Bush left office in January of 2009, we were losing between 700,000 and 800,000 jobs a month. As we added close to 100,000 jobs in August of 2012 - marking the 23rd consecutive month in which we've seen such growth, are we to blame Obama for the lost jobs before he was president and praise Bush for the added jobs after Obama stepped into office? So, I just read an article that Justin Bieber's mother told him from the start about the myth of Santa Claus and her reasoning was so the dishonesty of lying about Santa Claus didn't come back to potentially bite her when she tried telling him that while she lied about Santa, she wasn't lying about the existence of God. I'm not going to debate the existence of God. That's another matter entirely. However, I have always wondered what the pros and cons are of allowing children to believe the fairy tale known as Santa Claus. I'm not a parent yet, but I'm honestly uncertain of how I will approach the subject when I do have kids. I suppose I will have to speak with my wife about it and hopefully through discussion, we'll be able to come to a complete agreement, if not a decent compromise on the matter.
