Trebek: "How to trigger wannabe 'macho men.'" Contestant: "What is the Gillette commercial?"

For 30 years Gillette's tagline has been, "Gillette - the best a man can get!" In the razor giant's latest commercial, however, they've altered said tagline to, "the best men can be." It attempts to tackle the issue of toxic masculinity, as in the first half of the ad it portrays men fighting, bullying, and harassing others, before in the second half showcasing men who intervene on fights, help to prevent bullying, and stand up for women. Throughout the ad's duration, the narrator utters these words: "Is this the best a man can get? Is it? You can't hide from it. It's been going on for far too long. We can't laugh it off. Making the same old excuses. Boys will be boys. But something finally changed. And there will be no going back. Because we, we believe in the best in men. To say the right thing. To act the right way. Some already are. In ways big and small. But some is not enough. Because the boys watching today will be the men o...

"Third time's a charm"? Yeah, that doesn't make any sense...

Via a new commercial, I keep hearing the phrase, "Third time's a charm." The more I see that commercial and hear said phrase, the more I think, "Yeah, that doesn't make any sense." So, what, after a person has already failed twice, he or she will suddenly get lucky on the third try? In what situations does this happen most frequently? With job interviews, marriage proposals, lottery tickets? Do people actually go into their third attempt thinking, "Hey, the first two times were awful, but I'm due. This is lucky #3!"? Derek Desperate: "Will you marry me?" Nadia Negatory: "No" Derek: "How about now?" Nadia: "No" Derek: "Now?" Nadia: "Yes! I never thought you'd ask!" I don't think so... No, if a person fails at something two times, he or she shouldn't give up. However, no matter what they may want to believe, there's no such thing as the third time being a...

Protect the lives of puppy-monkey-babies!

Family Research Council founder James Dobson has decided to take his fight against abortion to the next level, as he has recently lobbied Congressional Republicans to sign a bill protecting the life of each and every puppy-monkey-baby. On his radio show, Family Talk with Dr. James Dobson , the evangelical leader said this: "Have you seen the Mountain Dew puppy-monkey-baby commercial? Some people have found this ad disturbing, even going so far as to say the creators must have been snorting some kind of drugs, like Pepto Bismol. I, however, find it disturbing for another reason - there has been no legislation proposed in Congress to protect puppy-monkey-babies from abortion. I realize there have been no other reported cases of puppy-monkey-babies and it's still highly perplexing how this first one came to be born - perhaps via a crazy threesome between a bulldog, a woman named Barbara Shitzcrazy, and a pygmy marmoset - but in any case, we must protect these fetus animal thing...

Flonase: "Six is greater than one!" No sh*t...

Once in a while (probably more often than I'd like to admit), I come across a commercial that appears to suggest that 99% of the viewing audience has a mean IQ of 56. A Flonase allergy relief nasal spray commercial is just the latest such ad. In this ad, the key line is, "Six is greater than one," referring to how the product will block six allergy symptoms as opposed to just one. Sure, it's good from an advertising perspective to point out that the product blocks six allergy symptoms. However, isn't there a better way of doing that than stating the obvious in an almost jokingly condescending way? "Six is greater than one!" No sh*t there, Sherlock... In any case, based on this commercial, expect Flonase to include the following words of wisdom in their upcoming ads: - "44 degrees is warmer than -44 degrees!" - "Right is to the right of left!" - "'War and Peace' is longer than a haiku!" - "Race cars a...

Dead Nationwide kid speaks out, says "April Fools!" to the country

In a surprising twist to the controversial Nationwide Super Bowl commercial, the dead kid from it, whom oddly enough appeared to be alive when we spoke with him, said, "April Fools, America!" When asked why the "joke" of a commercial was released on February 1st as opposed to April 1st, the dead kid said, "Come on! What April Fools jokes catch the most people by surprise? Those told in February! Duh!" He then went on at length about the concept of the commercial, saying, "Like, we were totally going to try and be funny like everyone else, right? But then we quickly realized that none of us were that funny, you know? I mean, we had ideas about there being a food fight in the kitchen of someone's home and then the mom slips on some ice cream, falls to the ground, and yells out, 'Damn you, Ben! Damn you Jerry!" but we didn't want to seem too anti-ice cream or even too, what's that word? Too lac, lax, laxative-intolerant or whatev...

If Nationwide isn't on your side, apparently you're dead...

Following Super Bowl Sunday, here are the top two things people are talking about:  1) "What in the hell was Pete Carroll thinking when he called for that pass on 2nd down from the 1-yard-line when Marshawn Lynch (AKA The Beast) is in the backfield?" 2) "What the (bleep) was up with that Nationwide commercial?" Yes, as most people now know, when they hear "Nationwide" from this point forward, they'll think of dead kids, or more specifically, dead kids coming back to life to talk about their death. I know, it's Jesus all over again... In case you're one of the four people in this country that has yet to see the before-mentioned commercial, here it is - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dKUy-tfrIHY In light of this horrific ad, memes have been circulating the Internet like herpes circulates backstage at rock concerts, and not wanting to be left out, I thought I'd have a little fun with the commercial as well.  When I firs...

I'm going to pretend that GEICO stole my idea

Have you seen the new GEICO commercial, where it pokes fun of stupid characters in horror films? If not, it can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yrrw0wNLc2g Oddly enough, I wrote something rather similar to the commercial on July 17th of 2013, entitled, "Horror film characters are ridiculously stupid," which can be read at this link: http://thekind-heartedsmartaleck.blogspot.com/2013/07/horror-film-characters-are-ridiculously.html The story goes as follows: Is it just me or is there a written requirement somewhere which says, "If you're a character in a horror film, you have to be stupid"? My girlfriend and I went to see the film The Purge last night, and like with many contemporary horror films, we spent more time laughing and giving each other the why-in-the-hell-are-they-doing-this-are-they-stupid looks. Yes, I know the main intent of horror films is to frighten viewers. However, if the viewers find the script and plot so ridiculous, i...

New Big Lots ad

Here's a fairly amusing new ad for Big Lots, entitled, "#StandUpMom - Stocktober": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C4VzpQyOJRQ If you like the ad and feel a friend or family member would like it and perhaps be interested in shopping at a Big Lots, please spread the word. My new customized Big Lots slogan: "Big Lots - Hey, at least we're not Wal-Mart."

Kay Jewelers commercials = facepalm

Kay Jewelers commercials have a tendency to make my eyes roll more than Linda Blair's doctors said they should, but their latest one really gets under my skin. In this commercial, a couple is sitting across from one another at a restaurant. As the man tries to get the woman's attention, he realizes the only way to do this is by texting her, since she's ignoring him while texting on her phone. He finally gives up any and all other options, and texts her with the message, "Look up." At this, he finally has her attention, she looks up, and he provides her with a gift from Kay Jewelers. The commercial then closes with the tagline, "Every kiss begins with Kay," as the couple takes a picture of themselves kissing with one of their phones. If that's not "romantic," I don't know what is... Based on this very commercial, if the trend continues, the next one will go something like this: Bruce Altiny: ::texts his girlfriend:: "Read ...

A gay family in a commercial sparks outrage. By the way, the patriotic song in the commercial was written by a lesbian...

Not only has the new Coca-Cola commercial sparked outrage amongst conservatives due to "America the Beautiful" being sung by Americans in different languages, a gay couple featured in the commercial has also had a similar affect. Here are some of the tweets regarding this portion of the commercial: - "Apparently, Coke had a gay couple in their super bowl commercial too. Appeasement much?" - "Holy cow did I just see a gay couple in a commercial which also mentions god? Way to go coke" - "While tweeting my hate of #coke cause of the language thing, I missed the gay dads part. What, no time to show an abortion too? #dickheads" The ironic part about all of this is the fact that the writer of the song "America the Beautiful" is Katharine Lee Bates, who happened to live with Katharine Coman for 25 years. After Coman passed away, Bates published a collection of poems about her former "partner." That's right - the writer...

Conservative site tries defending racist Coca-Cola commercial tweets

Many far-right conservatives' negative reactions to the Coca-Cola Super Bowl commercial have received a great deal of attention from the media. After these conservatives have been painted as racist and/or xenophobic, Kyle Becker of the ultra right-wing site Independent Journal Review decided to write a piece defending such individuals. In his article, titled, "Coca Cola Airs Controversial Multi-Cultural Version of 'America the Beautiful' During the Super Bowl," he wrote the following bits: - "While people expect fairly universal messages when it comes to corporate advertising, they don't expect nationally significant songs like 'America the Beautiful' to be chopped up into multiple languages." - "The sentiment behind the ad might be laudable: people of different nationalities living side by side without the divisive viewpoint that everyone who is different is the 'other.' But some people might rightly take offense that thei...

Coca-Cola's Super Bowl commercial sparks outrage among racists

I had to continually go into facepalm-mode after reading some tweets regarding the new Coca-Cola ("America the Beautiful") commercial last night: "From now on the national anthem is in one lanquage---ENGLISH! Got it Super Bowl!" Psst... That's "language," and at last check, "America the Beautiful" was not the National Anthem. It's Prince's "Let's Go Crazy." Okay, next? "Hey coke cola. Are we Americans of foreign decent or are we foreigners living in America hate your commercial. Speak English" He should heed his own advice, for the language he's speaking definitely isn't English. It sounds more like a hybrid of ignorance and gibberish, or gibberance. "Still pissed about that coca cola commercial. Get out of America you a*swholes." Hmm... Now there's an odd visual... "Speak American if your in America commercials are dumb" ...as is refusing to use punctuation. S...
