Anymore, it seems like not a day passes when I don't read about a young woman who was sexually assaulted or raped on (or near) campus, and every day, this news becomes ever more disturbing. The latest such report comes via Al Jazeera, who investigated students that had been assaulted or raped at the ultra-conservative Christian school Bob Jones University. During the summer before she started attending classes at Bob Jones, Katie Landry was raped by a coworker on multiple occasions. As is commonplace among rape victims, Landry felt shameful, and due to this, neglected to report the crime(s) for several years. Her grades suffered as a direct result of this. After she finally admitted the events to both herself and others, she sought counseling, only to be told by the dean of students that, "We have to find the sin in your life that caused your rape." Remember the days when African-Americans had to regularly worry about segregation, lynchings, and the Ku Klux Klan? Well, one conservative Facebook group would like to carry on the tradition of lynching, and not just any African-American, but the President of the United States - Barack Obama. The Facebook group "America the next generation" recently posted a photo of President Obama in a noose, which included a caption that read, "The making of a National Holiday." After receiving plenty of criticism for the post, the creator of it took it down and posted the following message: "OK by are own choice out of respect of our regular followers that requested us to remove the post with the noose around Obamas head, [W]e did so out of Respect to them and we will take the high road!" Every now and again, I bump into someone (usually a guy) who at least partially blames rape victims for the crime. I can just imagine the look on my face as I'm hearing the partial defense of rapists - one which religious mothers may give after they've lost their voice and caught their son masturbating - confused, silent, shocked, and disgusted. Of course, when hearing such opinions, it always starts like this: "Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that rape is right or anything, but come on... I mean..." ...and then comes the alleged rationale of the rapists and the critique of the victims. "When a woman wears something like that and shows that much skin, she's just seeking attention and what's a guy to think?" I joined a site a while back upon moving to the area, as I had lived in Nebraska for 26 years and didn't know anyone around here. I was seeking friendships at first, but having lived here for 4 years and working at home, I'm now open to other things.
