One would only need to look at the title of Liz Peek's latest Fiscal Times article to conclude that it could go down as one of the most ridiculous articles of the year. It's so ridiculous, after reading the title, one would likely have to double-check the source to make certain it wasn't written by someone at the satire site, The Onion . The title of the article is, "Obama's Massive Failure Has Delivered Trump's Success." Oh, it gets better... Let's take a closer, more in-depth look, shall we? Ms. Peek starts her article with this: "No president in our country's history has been more concerned about his legacy than has Barack Obama. How ironic that people might someday best remember our first African-American Commander in Chief for having inspired the candidacy of Donald Trump." It seems that Republican politicians, those running for president in particular, are suffering from a serious case of selective Alzheimer's regarding the Iraq War. Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush has gone back and forth on the matter more than a dance instructor tripping on acid. Florida Senator Marco Rubio has done similarly, only without the occasional hearing lapse. Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal has gone the denial route and attempted to paint the war in a positive light without actually answering what he would have done if he had known then what he knows now with regard to Iraq. Just recently, I read a blog written by the most boring voice in man's history - Ben Stein, entitled, "The Trayvon Martin case is worrying me." This blog bounced around like a lightning-speed pinball, but mainly focused on the Trayvon Martin case - how George Zimmerman was a "poor soul" in this whole ordeal (even though he's still living), that the liberal media made him out to be a "Klansman," and he basically insinuated that African-Americans are lazy and violent people, whom need our prayers - because closing our eyes and thinking about someone's problems will make them magically disappear (from our minds). Are you in favor of stricter gun control laws? Have you ever engaged in a debate on the subject with a far-right gun enthusiast? At some point in the conversation, have they brought up Chicago as evidence that gun control laws don't work? If so, you're not alone! Is Chicago known to have fairly strict gun laws? Yes. Is it known to have a high homicide rate? Yes again. However, there's more to the story than that. The fact is that gun-related crimes have been high in Chicago since before the stricter gun laws were enacted and such crimes have actually decreased since they were put into effect. Even with the stricter gun control laws, there are approximately six times as many guns that are owned in Chicago than in New York City. Also, while the gun laws may be stricter in Chicago than most other areas in this country, such laws are much more lax in other portions of the state and adjacent states. I've heard and read numerous comments from Republicans that President Obama has done nothing but whine and blame his predecessor - George W. Bush - for everything. In conjunction with that, Dubya didn't appear at the Republican National Convention. It's as if Republicans want to pretend that those 8 years he was in office never happened. Believe me - I want to pretend that George W. Bush was never president either; however - he was. We can't just overlook the 8 years he was in the Oval Office and suggest that his decisions between 2001-2009 hasn't had any effect on us between the years of 2009-2012. When Bush left office in January of 2009, we were losing between 700,000 and 800,000 jobs a month. As we added close to 100,000 jobs in August of 2012 - marking the 23rd consecutive month in which we've seen such growth, are we to blame Obama for the lost jobs before he was president and praise Bush for the added jobs after Obama stepped into office? I love when people resort to what they consumed the night before as an excuse. I sometimes think that's why people drink alcohol in the first place, because it automatically gives them an excuse to be stupid. It's even worse when people claim to not have remembered the prior evening's events. "Oh my gosh, I was like so wasted last night." "Yeah you were. I can't believe you..." "I did that? No way! I so don't remember!" "You don't? Oh my gosh! You..." Then come the details of things the person is too embarrassed to admit. Alcohol makes us numb, indifferent and we lack the connection of cause and effect when we're intoxicated. Our conscience isn't quite where it should be when we're inebriated. I mean, I admit, I've done dumb things while I've been drinking, but I remember everything I did, won't deny what I did and won't play the drunk-excuse card with anyone. It's a sad excuse...
