The Kind-Hearted Smart Aleck

As regular readers know, I'm pretty liberal as far as politics goes, and while I'm often times not happy with the Democratic Party, I still find it much easier and more comical to criticize and satirize the Republican Party. Also, I'm about as big a fan of Texas Governor Rick Perry as Gandhi was a fan of AK-47s. Keeping all that in mind, however, I think some members of the press have been much too hard on Perry's recent comments about Texas State Senator Wendy Davis. The controversy started a couple weeks ago during a speech Perry was giving at the National Right To Life conference, when he made the following remarks: "Who are we to say that children born into the worst of circumstances can't grow to live successful lives? In fact, even the woman who filibustered the Senate the other day was born into difficult circumstances. She was the daughter of a single woman, she was a teenage mother herself. She managed to eventually graduate from Harvard Law School...

Remember that big drone controversy surrounding President Obama? Last month, the Obama Administration said it was theoretically possible, as well as legal, for the president to order a drone strike on an American citizen under, and I quote, "extraordinary circumstances." The administration then elaborated some on this statement by saying the president didn't possess this authority if the American citizen was "not engaged in combat." Ever since I saw the headlines and read the reports, while I understood some Congresspeople's concerns, as well as non-politicians', I thought things were getting blown out-of-proportion. It seemed quite clear that these hypothetical drone strikes on American citizens would only occur if the person was a member of a terrorist organization and engaged in combat. Remember President George W. Bush and the Iraq War during his term? Remember how his popularity seemed to dwindle by the day following the peak at 9/11, and how support for his decision to invade Iraq seemed to diminish by the day as well? Especially after it was reported that the country possessed no weapons of mass destruction, which is why we invaded them in the first place? Yeah, those were the days, right? Why do I bring this up? Because Senate Republicans filibustered Defense Secretary nominee Chuck Hagel yesterday. It was the first time in our history that this has happened. Why did they do this one may ask?
