The Kind-Hearted Smart Aleck

It seems that many sportswriters and analysts are saying that San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick is worth every penny of his 6-year, $110+ million deal ($61 million guaranteed). While I'm not going to adamantly declare they're wrong, I'm also not going to boast such confidence that they're right either. Colin Kaepernick is a young, athletic quarterback, with a great deal of potential, and who has accomplished quite a bit for being just 26-years-old. He's 21-8 as a starter and 4-2 in the playoffs. So, what's the problem? Sign him to the big deal, right? I criticize Fox News more than Rush Limbaugh eats at an all-you-can-eat buffet after smoking weed. However, there is one Fox News personality I like, who stands out from all the others and that's Shep Smith.  Often times, he comes across as the lone sane voice on Fox, that or a guy who has a fetish with playing devil's advocate and getting under his co-workers' skin (not literally, of course).  On Tuesday night, Shep was his usual non-Fox (meaning sane and reasonable) self, when he said, "Isn't it possible to say, 'We are better off?' I mean you could make that argument and make it pretty succinctly, couldn't you? I mean we were in a pretty bad free fall. I remember a day when we thought that the whole economy of the world was going to collapse and a lot has been done to improve things, hasn't it?" I got into an interesting (sort of) discussion with someone very close to me last week. Somehow, the discussion transitioned to homosexuality. I guess his wife, due to being a die-hard Christian, still isn't okay with the concept. This guy then said he doesn't necessarily agree it's a sin, but wanted to play devil's advocate and saying that these individuals would be condemned to hell unless they changed their lifestyle, because they'd die sinners. I'm agnostic, so I am rather convinced (unless I can be proven wrong) that it is virtually impossible for a person to either prove beyond a reasonable doubt that a God does or doesn't exist. Given that and having been raised a Christian, I can't understand the before-mentioned logic. According to Christianity, there was a man whom lived a perfect life and died as a sacrifice for man's sins. If people believe him to be the savior and ask forgiveness for their sins, they will live eternally in a paradise...
