The Kind-Hearted Smart Aleck

I remember in an episode of "Seinfeld," George Costanza just up and decided, since things had never really gone right for him, to be and do the exact opposite of what he normally would in hope that it'd bring about better results. It did. George soon had a beautiful girlfriend, a good job and was feeling great. He ended up being like Elaine and Elaine, in turn, suffered some bad fortune and wound up being like George. Now, I'm not going to go to such extremes as George and be the total opposite person in any and every situation or make the opposite decision every single time, but I'm thinking about going that direction in a couple areas - dating being the big one. I'm not sure what my deal has been over the years, but I have had rotten luck in the dating world. It's either been that I've started dating and find out the person isn't who I thought she was and wound up getting lied to and cheated on OR I pursue someone whom gives me mixed messages...

Even with his approval ratings right around 45%, I'm growing more and more confident that Barack Obama will be re-elected in the 2012 election and I'm going to call it right now - Obama wins the 2012 election. There are a few reasons why my confidence on this matter is growing. First off, history gives Obama a very good chance. In a majority of cases, incumbent presidents win their re-election bid. There are exceptions, of course (Carter, H.W., etc.), but those exceptions are definitely in the minority. Secondly, for as awful as things have looked at times in this country, especially on the economic/jobs front, Obama's approval has been fairly steady, in the 43-50% range. He hasn't dropped below 40%, which means while a good majority of the country isn't happy with how things are going right now, they're not assessing all or even most of the blame to Obama and are willing to give him some more time to right the ship, so to speak. Based on what transpired with regard to the debt ceiling (and elsewhere), I can picture the following ad in the run-up to the 2012 elections: The poor will be thrown under the bus. The middle class will be no more. The rich will become richer. Women won't have the right to choose. Gays will be treated like second-class citizens. Minorities' votes will be limited as much as possible. We will get our daily pointers from Fox News. We will speak in catchy slogans and our voices will be raised at every available opportunity. We will instill fear and anger in the American people and through this, encourage division. We will misuse the name of God. We will never compromise for the better good of the people, always standing firm, regardless of the consequences. We will represent 1% of this great country. We're the Republican Party and we approve this message.
