Since its inception following the not guilty verdict of George Zimmerman in the killing of Trayvon Martin, I've been a firm supporter of the Black Lives Matter movement. Yes, "all lives matter," but it seems that black lives often get tossed to the side like they're of little or no value, to the point where many decided to stand up and say, "Black lives matter (too)!" However, like with all movements, as well as the police force, Black Lives Matter is far from perfect. I, for one, just from a nationwide perception standpoint, didn't think taking the mic away from Bernie Sanders at a rally was the wisest of moves. Did it create a buzz? Yes. Did it inspire some people to join the cause? Yes again. However, did it sway people who were on the fence about the movement? Unlikely. The more I think about the matter, the more I can't wrap my head around hard-core conservatives' thinking when it comes to sex. This includes: Education, contraception, homosexuality (and with that, gay marriage), and abortion. I can understand perfectly well why most self-described conservatives are against abortion. However, whether one supports or opposes such procedures and whether they are legal or illegal, they are going to occur. I'm not saying it's right or wrong, just am matter-of-factly stating that these procedures aren't ever going to completely vanish from our existence. So, since that's the case, wouldn't it make sense for "pro-lifers" to support measures which would likely decrease the number of abortions yet wouldn't endanger women's freedoms and/or health? Following the George Zimmerman ruling and President Obama's emotional speech regarding race in America, it seems that many far-right wing media outlets and talking heads tried to make it a point that racism doesn't exist in this country and George Zimmerman had every right to shoot and kill Trayvon Martin. One such person was neoconservative columnist of the right-wing site National Review Victor Davis Hanson, who wrote an article entitled, "Facing Facts about Race - Young black males are at greater risk from their peers than from the police or white civilians."
