At the 2016 Democratic National Convention (DNC), then First Lady Michelle Obama passionately told supporters, "When they go low, we go high!" "They," in this case, are Republicans. While I'll be the first to admit it's not always easy to adhere to Ms. Obama's calling, there are times it does a grave disservice to our party and cause when we don't. The most recent such case is with regard to progressives focusing their time, with regard to the immigration debate, on insulting individuals like Melania, Vanessa, and Barron Trump. First Lady Melania Trump recently released a statement where she said she "hates to see children separated from their families." When visiting with the king and queen of Spain, she added she enjoyed "focusing on the ways we can positively impact children." After Khizr and Ghazala Khan's emotional speech in honor of their deceased son, Captain Humayun Khan, at the Democratic National Convention, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump would have been smart to just let things go. Of course, that's not his style, and he felt the need to respond, by saying the following: "If you look at his wife [Ghazala Khan], she was standing there. She had nothing to say. She probably, maybe she wasn't allowed to have anything to say. You tell me." and "I've made a lot of sacrifices. I work very, very hard. In light of watching both the Republican and Democratic National Conventions and with the first Presidential debate being just a couple days away, I thought I'd attempt to combine the three events in a writing of mine, where the stark contrasts of the two conventions are presented by way of a debate. This is getting to be ridiculous. I take that back - it's been getting ridiculous for some time and there may not be a word in the English language fully appropriate for just how ridiculous things have gotten. At President Obama's Univision forum recently, he responded to a question with the following: "I think that I've learned some lessons over the last four years, and the most important lesson I've learned is that you can't change Washington from the inside. You can only change it from the outside. That's how I got elected, and that's how the big accomplishments like health care got done, was because we mobilized the American people to speak out." Now, I don't completely agree with the president, as I feel it's kind of silly to suggest you can't make a difference yourself and change Washington from the inside in addition to people on the outside working hard to bring about change in this nation's capital. Like with every speech at the two conventions over the past couple weeks, Bill Clinton's was subject to fact-checking. However, the Associated Press has received some criticism for one particular fact-check of the former president. In his speech last Wednesday night, Clinton said that a Romney pollster stated their campaign would not be "dictated by fact-checkers". He continued on by saying, "Now that is true. I couldn't have said it better myself -- I just hope you remember that every time you see the ad." The AP responded to this as follows: "Clinton, who famously finger-wagged a denial on national television about his sexual relationship with intern Monica Lewinsky and was subsequently impeached in the House on a perjury charge, has had his own uncomfortable moments over telling the truth. Having watched both the Republican and Democratic National Conventions over the past couple weeks and knowing most people aren't quite as big political nerds as myself, I thought I'd share the ten speeches which most caught my attention (excluding Clint Eastwood's conversation with an empty chair, of course): 10. I must admit that I'm having trouble finding motivation to write about politics today. Following President Obama's speech last night, I thought to myself - "It's done! It's over! The conventions are through! 24 hours of convention coverage in two weeks is finally complete! Where's my drink?" No, I didn't drink, but so long as I'm feeling up to par this evening, I think I'll be deserving of a couple. The evening went as I expected it. To my disappointment, Betty White didn't come out and talk to an empty chair. The world didn't end when Obama accepted the party's nomination to run for a second term. Osama bin Laden didn't magically appear and say, "Boo!" No, it went pretty much as could be expected. As typical, there were about three speeches which stood out to me from the rest. I'm just going to say it - Democrats throw better parties than Republicans. While Republicans may have different country artists from which to choose, all of five semi-well known steroid-consumed actors and a host of speakers with slightly more enthusiasm and charisma than a comatose Ben Stein, Democrats have much more to work with as far as musicians, Hollywood and great orators are concerned. Granted, there were some very dull speeches last night that made me long for the day I could watch a full miniature golf tournament in slow-motion. However, both conventions have had their fair share of such speeches. But whereas, I can only recall three semi-standout speeches at the Republican National Convention (John Kasich, Ann Romney and especially Condoleeza Rice), I'm already having trouble remembering the names of all the great speeches at the Democratic National Convention and there's still another night left of it! Due to the cable being out last night, I was not able to see this in real time, but I guess actor Kal Penn poked fun at Clint Eastwood's discussion with an empty chair last night at the Democratic National Convention. I had every intention of watching both the Republican and Democratic National Conventions, Tuesday through Thursday, from 7 to 11 pm EST. I followed through with that last week for the RNC, but due to Time Warner Cable deciding to leave me without cable starting at almost exactly 7 pm last night (I know - conspiracy, right? Just kidding) until 3:30 in the morning, the only portion of the DNC I could watch was on ABC from 10 to 11, where I watched both San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro and First Lady Michelle Obama speak. Due to the limited time I was able to watch the convention last night, I won't be able to provide as thorough of an overview as I had the previous Tuesday through Thursday. If I have cable the next couple nights, though, I will certainly watch the DNC in its entirety as I had initially intended. Just based on what I did in fact see last night, I noticed both striking similarities and differences between the two conventions. As far as similarities go, both speakers ...
