For 30 years Gillette's tagline has been, "Gillette - the best a man can get!" In the razor giant's latest commercial, however, they've altered said tagline to, "the best men can be." It attempts to tackle the issue of toxic masculinity, as in the first half of the ad it portrays men fighting, bullying, and harassing others, before in the second half showcasing men who intervene on fights, help to prevent bullying, and stand up for women. I find the high octane bickering about former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick becoming the new face of Nike interesting, yet perplexing. While I've long supported Kaepernick and those like him using their first amendment rights to peacefully protest, I'd also be the first to point out Kaepernick is anything but the perfect role model for the cause. On the other side of the deal, Nike also doesn't have a perfect reputation when it comes to measures of equality. I give Colin Kaepernick credit for trying to walk the talk after basically getting blackballed by the NFL. He's appeared to devote a great deal of his time doing charity events, volunteer work, and donating to charitable causes. Family Research Council founder James Dobson has decided to take his fight against abortion to the next level, as he has recently lobbied Congressional Republicans to sign a bill protecting the life of each and every puppy-monkey-baby. On his radio show, Family Talk with Dr. James Dobson , the evangelical leader said this: "Have you seen the Mountain Dew puppy-monkey-baby commercial? Some people have found this ad disturbing, even going so far as to say the creators must have been snorting some kind of drugs, like Pepto Bismol. Former Florida governor and current Republican candidate Jeb Bush recently received a heap of criticism for his response to the mass shooting at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon, as he said, "Stuff happens..." Once in a while (probably more often than I'd like to admit), I come across a commercial that appears to suggest that 99% of the viewing audience has a mean IQ of 56. A Flonase allergy relief nasal spray commercial is just the latest such ad. In this ad, the key line is, "Six is greater than one," referring to how the product will block six allergy symptoms as opposed to just one. Sure, it's good from an advertising perspective to point out that the product blocks six allergy symptoms. However, isn't there a better way of doing that than stating the obvious in an almost jokingly condescending way? "Six is greater than one!" No sh*t there, Sherlock... Wisconsin enacted a law in 2009 which gave employees, especially women, more power to challenge pay discrimination to the state courts. With the law in place, gender pay gap in the state improved from 36th to 24th in the country (approximately $0.78 to the $1.00 that men made). In 2012, however, Republican Governor Scott Walker and the Republican-controlled state legislature decided to repeal this law. Now with Governor Walker in a tight race with Democratic challenger Mary Burke, whom has been attacking him on this very repeal, Walker has decided to respond via Lieutenant Governor Rebecca Kleefisch, where she says the following in an ad: "That's why I find it so insulting that Mary Burke would say that we're trying to make it harder for women to earn equal pay. After consistently losing the woman's vote on election day and that demographic leaning progressively left in the most recent election cycles, the Republican Party has tried appealing more to women voters. However, these efforts have failed on a grander scale than Mel Gibson would if he taught a Sympathy-For-Jews class. The main problem is the Republican Party doesn't seem to understand why women don't see them in a positive light and lean more toward Democrats come election day. They appear to think their problem is not being in touch with a woman's hobbies and interests, as opposed to their voting records when it comes to women's issues. According to them, if women heard Republican candidates speaking against women's rights in a kinder manner, by acknowledging a common interest of theirs, they'd vote for them in greater numbers. With regard to a new Nabisco Honey Maid commercial, which showcases a same-sex couple, anti-LGBT rights Pastor Kevin Swanson of Colorado was at it again, as he made the following statements in a Generations Radio broadcast: - "When you come down to things like axe murder or homosexuality and you say, 'We're really going to promote it and we're going to encourage everybody in America to engage in this or at least support this thing,' there will be people on the other side who will take an adamantly opposed position to your support of axe murdering or homosexuality. They will be intolerant -- they will be very intolerant of that which is evil, like axe murdering." - "Maybe they had another family where a dog is the wife with a human husband. Homosexuals love their friends and cannibals love their victims - they taste good."
