Ah, the Luxuries of Being Sick

Ah, how is everyone doing this morning? I'm, well, sick. I can't smell much, can't taste much, have a deeper voice than usual (which is saying something) and a rather sinus-y voice at that. My family keeps bugging me to see a doctor. I don't know if it's just me (it‘s not), but I don't like going to see dentists or doctors much. It's always the same thing. They check you out, make you open your mouth real big and say ah, make you breathe deeply to check your lungs, may ask you to cough for them and if you're lucky, for good measure, they may give you a throat culture. Final bill ::clicks numbers on the calculator:: and that comes out to...TOO MUCH! I will trust my advil cold and sinus, nyquil, echinacea, liquids, soup, tissues, cough drops and bed, thank you.

Don't even get me started on dentists. When I was a child ('tis was so long ago), I used to look forward to it, because after the appointment, I'd get to pick out a toy from this basket. I don't get to do that anymore and since I've gotten older (imagine that), so have my teeth. I'm one of the most anal people I know about brushing. I brush after every meal, floss and use listerine. But it's never good enough for the peeps at the dentist office. "You should've flossed more." "You should've brushed harder." "Did you use listerine?" "Have you drank any Dr.Pepper or Mountain Dew in the past month?" "Do you eat a lot of sweets?" Okay, so I'm going to basically eat bread, drink water and live in the bathroom for the rest of my life...brushing my teeth, flossing and using listerine. Would that make them happy? But, I'm sorry to say, doctors, I will not do such a thing, so :P (supposed to be my tongue sticking out, but it's a bit distorted, wouldn't you say?)!

Other than that though, it's actually a be-a-utiful day outside. Yeah, it's a bit on the chilly side, but from the inside looking out, it’sgorgeous. The sun is shining. It snowed a bit last night, so the trees look perty. The sky is clear. If I wasn't sick, this would be the perfect day to play around in the snow, but because of the illness, I believe it's in my best interest to just look and appreciate the beauty of today. Maybe tomorrow. It'd make for a beautiful picture too (if only I had a camera...and I do...am just too lazy to get it at this second), but I'm busy typing at this current juncture, so that can wait.

You know how people can misperceive others and say they look or don't look like something/someone? I went to a lot of rock concerts, especially during my high school and early college years (man, I sound old). I'd wear the shirt I bought at the show to school and people would ask me if I went and have this very confused look on their face. "You're into them? You don't look like someone who'd be into rock. You look more like someone who'd be into country or folk."

Ah, yes, those were the days. But, what about when someone is sick? You can usually tell if someone isn't feeling well through facial expressions, body language, perhaps a cough, no voice, etc. So, if someone asks this person if they're feeling sick, then they've obviously cued in on the hints portrayed to them by the ill specimen. But what if a person was just sitting there, watching a television show, feeling fine (but not quite dandy) and someone walks in there and asks, "Are you feeling okay? You look a bit sick..." If I was that person sitting on the couch, chilling, watching tv, I wouldn't even answer. I'd hop up off the couch, find the nearest mirror and see what the heck was wrong with me! Who knows, it could be an evil April Fool's joke, but it'd make the person a bit paranoid, thinking, "What did they see? Did they see something I can't see ::as I look in the mirror observing every inch of my face::"? I mean, it'd be like that same person walking into the room and asking his or her sister, "I've been wanting to ask you this, but are you pregnant?" Say the girl is, then there's no problem. She'd just be turning red and asking, "How did you know?" But, what if she wasn't? Then that question would ruin her weekend. She'd gallop on over to the nearest mirror and be checking a few things out herself.

So, the moral of this story? I don't know if there's a moral. Just be careful about what you ask someone, I guess. I hope everyone is feeling well out there today. I shallst try to get better here, so that when someone asks me if I feel sick, because I look it, I can look them right in the eyes, smile, and say, "Thank you and I feel great."

Boycotting jukeboxes because of TouchTunes

I love music and enjoy hitting the bar(s) over the weekend, so naturally, when the mood strikes me, I've never been coy about playing some songs on the jukebox. This past Thursday, a friend of mine turned 50, so several friends of her's, including myself, all met up to celebrate the occasion. At around 9:30, a friend of mine and I both chipped in $5 to play some songs on the jukebox. Four hours and 231 skips later, we gave up on hearing the songs we had selected, and went home knowing we had just wasted $5. This wasn't the first time such a thing had happened to me (and many others), and due to that, I'll be boycotting jukeboxes. Why? The scam known as TouchTunes. You see, here's how the plot typically breaks down. A person (or group of people) downloads the TouchTunes app on his/her phone, consumes one too many adult beverages, and due to this, has less care for spending extra money to hear the songs of their choosing right NOW. That's the thing with TouchTun...

A closer look at the Scramble With Friends power-ups

I am unashamed to admit that I'm a nerd. My idea of a good time is playing a word game like Boggle or Scrabble. Thankfully, I (and many others) can play such games via Facebook and/or my (our) cell phone(s). While it seems that cheating has become more commonplace in these games (Words With Friends in particular) than San Diego has had nice weather, I've yet to give in to that craze. One element present with the game Scramble With Friends (Boggle) not present in Words With Friends (Scrabble) are legal boosts called "power-ups," which cost a number of tokens from the 15 available. I've now tried all five power-ups, including the latest one which costs money. So, in case anyone's curious about playing the game or giving these power-ups a gander, here's a rundown of them all: Freeze - I think this is probably my favorite of all the power-ups. With the freeze, time stands still for a matter of seconds, which allows you more time to find words and improve...

Face guarding is legal in college football and the NFL

I just wanted to remind fans and announcers especially, that face guarding is legal in both college football and the NFL. It all comes down to contact. So long as a defender doesn't make contact with an intended receiver, he doesn't have to turn around to play the ball. I can't tell you how many times every week I hear announcers talk about face guarding being a penalty. It's not. I even heard one announcer yesterday state, "If the defender doesn't turn around and play the ball, the ref will call pass interference every time." That's simply not true. Courtesy of referee Bill LeMonnier, he says this with regard to the rule at the college level (answered on 8/12/13): "NCAA rules on pass interference require the face guarding to have contact to be a foul. No contact, no foul by NCAA rules." In the NFL rule book, this is written:  "Actions that constitute defensive pass interference include but are not limited to: (a) Contact by a ...
